We've gone away from the recruitment that brought us success. Lescott, Jags, Cahill etc.

Would we be able to identify those players if they were available nowadays?

Isn't Branthwaite an indication we still keep an ear to the ground for lower league players? Stones, Holgate, DCL all signed from the pyramid. Linked with Max Aarons recently weren't we.

Some good players in those leagues but they also likely won't appease a lot of the fans who want big shiny names since we have a bit of dosh.

Stones was a Moyes era signing. Holgate pre-dates Brands and Walsh I think. Under Brands the recruitment has been totally the opposite of what we usually went for it. It's either been unwanted players at bigger PL clubs, or slow technical players from the Europe. It hasn't work in the main and I think we'd be better looking at the championship because there are good players there. We need to find the players first rather than signing them after they have already came onto the scene elsewhere.

Well yeh I agree but it's also clear we have two quite opposing people looking at the signings with Brands wanting younger and athletic players, Carlo trusted older heads. Something has to give. I don't really think we'll be unearthing any gems though under this project.

Absolutely this. Add Zaha to the above list - he's almost 29, has already failed at a big club, will cost a fortune and expect massive wages, and will have no resale value.

Hope he signs some players from other leagues next season as there's some bargains. Possibly some unknown gems rather than players like Iwobi Delph King etc

We need some bargains. We cant afford to keeping plugging gaps with 30M players.

I'm genuinely curious how recruitment this window is going to play out regarding the type of players we target. I'm assuming Ancelotti is perturbed by our mediocrity and once again is going to push for established instant success type signings like last window that have little merit for long term development or investment. So if that notion is true , brands will actually have to challenge him and sway him to employ younger prospects that will require honing their skills. Not confident he's willing to oppose that approach.
