He’s responsible for the dross but nothing about what he’s done since he’s been here suggests he will be able to move on all the players he should this summer. Only way we’re getting rid of the likes of Walcott Bolasie is their contracts running down. Recruitments hit and miss but he’s failed massively at moving on players who haven’t made the grade.
I'm not a Brands fan but I'm not sure that he's failed massively more he hasn't turned water into wine. If no team wants these players or are willing to buy them and the players aren't willing to take pay cuts then what option does he have other than the loans he's used? He can't force another side to buy dross that are deemed not good enough for the tenth best side in England

What manager in their right mind is buying the likes of Bolasie, Walcott, Iwobi, Gomes etc and paying the money they're on here. It's just something we are stuck with unless they hit form on loan like Kean

I don’t disagree, it’s a tough, tough job but it is his job and he’s paid a lot of money to do it. It’s not a small part of his job either, it’s literally one of his main duties. If it’s impossible then what’s the point of a director of football? Could have appointed me or you and we could have let players contracts run down until they go for free. He’s failed at moving the dross on, no arguements.

Is that not a problem every club faces though? Chelsea can't shift Drinkwater and the likes, United with Jones, Arsenal had to pay Ozil to leave, Spurs have Rose, lower down Palace are releasing 16 players this summer of mostly deadwood. not sure what he can do when some players in the squad are on 4/5 times what they're actually worth. He's failed by giving players like Keane an extension making him harder to shift and buying Iwobi/Bernard in the first place but for the players already here when he joined its just one of those things. You can't force them to leave and you can't force a team to buy them. As DoF his job is to buy a squad capable of challenging and making us sustainable, which at the moment he's failing at. It's also a far bigger picture than just buying and selling players.

The selling aspect is completely out of his control, Sandro was willing to go early whilst Besic and Bolasie were happy to stay and see out their ludicrous contracts. Nobody in the world could convince me there's someone so good at being a DoF they were able to sell Bolasie despite bombing out of two championship clubs, a Belgian side and a Portuguese side. His only deadwood he could've realistically sold was Kenny last summer and even then Burnley and Schalke wouldn't stump up 10 million for him. Sometimes deadwood is exactly that and it's just a waiting game, the problem is he keeps buying more deadwood in Delph, Iwobi, King, Gbamin (maybe harsh) and extending Keane and apparently Sigurdsson.

Can’t disagree with a lot of that, we’ll reasoned. It is a difficult job but again, it is the job. When he was appointed he said his role (part of) was reducing the wage bill and moving players on. As you say, his job is to build a squad, you need to move players on to do that. The glacial pace at which he’s done that is a big part of why, after three years, we’re not much further forward than when he joined us.

Is £20m in today's market a premium?

Well he was 25m and he'd played a full season in the premiership.

Brands has been here since 2018 and Godfrey is all you have?

Maybe we give the DoF gig to the fella at Norwich who signed Godfrey for a few grand from York.

If he would actually use the championship market properly maybe we'd get somewhere. If you ignore relegated players, then he hasn't signed one player from the championship. It makes no sense to me. I'd hope it's not an arrogance thing where we think we are above those sorts of players because they are far better than what we usually go for in the market.

Anyone who had watched any english football last year knew Watkins was a good player. Why were we not in for him?

I'd say in today's market, where I think today Burnley want £50m for James Tarkowski, and a market where we spent more on both Keane and Mina is a good deal.

I never said it's been his only success I was just giving an example.

Because maybe Ancelotti doesn't rate Watkins? Maybe we were after him but didn't want to pay £30m for him? Maybe we play in a one striker formation and fancied our own number 9 starting instead?

We have absolutely no idea which players we want/don't want only those that actually sign.

We've gone away from the recruitment that brought us success. Lescott, Jags, Cahill etc.

Would we be able to identify those players if they were available nowadays?
