2020/21 Marcel Brands

Brands is under the spotlight here. As many m misses as hits. Not overly impressed at all.

I said earlier that If for the £27-35mil Iwobi fee, £22mil Gomes fee, £27mil Mina fee and £22mil Gbamin fee (unlucky)...

...then with that £100mil we could have signed 4 highly rated U21 international players and either they do well or we make our money back on them -- or potentially a profit in Kean's case.

The problem we have now is that if we decide to go down this road and spend £100mil on French u21s like Kamara, Tchouameni, Badiashile and Diaby -- its now not enough money and also we still lack one or two players -- were covering holes due to bad recruitment. Instead of already having those players in and adding 2 more to them.

If he goes down the road of those potential top 4 level players then great...

...ive seen people wanting us to sign players who are at best Europa league standard so we have squad depth.

If you sign top quality youngsters they provide the squad depth and push first teamers out.

I think we need to follow that plan this summer at u23 age and below but we'll need to spend £100mil+sales.

Isn't the premise of a DOF is to espouse or enact a particular footballing philosophy regardless of the manager? Then the manager and DOF can make compromises as a means to generally arrive on a consensus for what is feasible. As the manager and DOF are supposed to cultivate a synthesis or unified vision for the club. Under Brand's tenure I haven't witnessed that especially with the youth setup there's no overreaching notion on playing being envisioned for the club. It seems rather haphazard.

Not every signing needs to be £20m+, and we as a fanbase NEED to accept that as well. Price tag doesn't define how good they are. Not every signing needs to be a "name".

Brands needs to go after the players he was looking at whilst at PSV, go to the source. Too often we've had other Clubs go to the "source", get a player for buttons, 12 months later he's getting bought by us for £50m (use Richarlison as an example).

His hands are tied due to the wage issue, but Walcott, Bolasie and co are all leaving the Club, big chunk of change freed up, then you add in we expect the likes of Bernard to leave, theres good amount of room forming.

Which of us doesn't accept that?

We've had years of overspending on crap. Majority are asking for a change in recruitment stance.

Isn't Branthwaite an indication we still keep an ear to the ground for lower league players? Stones, Holgate, DCL all signed from the pyramid. Linked with Max Aarons recently weren't we.

Some good players in those leagues but they also likely won't appease a lot of the fans who want big shiny names since we have a bit of dosh.
Fans will not care one iota where a player was signed from if they do the business on the pitch. In fact quite the opposite really, fans absolutely love the idea that the club has got one over on other teams by finding a bargain that nobody else had spotted. That's obviously leaving aside the fact that even if the fans weren't happy, it should not affect the decisions made by an even vaguely competent DoF.

Pretty sure you're being consciously ignorant there to the views of large portions of this fanbase.

If we signed Jose Bloggez from the Czech league this place would pop off.

He's good with both feet, can pick a pass and has an eye for goal.

The vast majority have been asking for a complete change to our recruitment processes for a while now. People want to see us find the players first rather than after they have become established. People want to see us go back to tried and tested methods of giving a chance to the best young players in the championship. People want to see young hungry players with a point to prove. People want to see us sign aggressive players with pace and energy. People want us to stop wasting money on unwanted players at the top clubs. People want us to stop throwing money at overrated players to appease the twitter and instagram crowd.

We need to change our recruitment or we will keep making the same mistakes. The only place you will see people screaming for big names like Coutinho etc is on twitter, and twitter is not reflective of real life.

I just want players who I like and feel happy to see representing my team. I want to enjoy football again - that is surely not too much to ask.

5 years ago that, and with Walsh.

I know when and who it was who signed him, point is, the attitude of the fanbase still hasn't changed despite Gueye being our best player aside from Lukaku over the last few years.

Since Moshiri has been at the Club the fans want nothing but big name signings, throwing the cash about like we have an infinite amount. We need to stop chasing the names and getting ripped off for £20m+ as its clear signing only £20m+ players doesnt always work, our squad is littered with them and we're utter shabite.

The uproar when we were about to sign Gueye from relegated Aston Villa tells you all you need to know about the attitude of the fanbase mate.

That was when we first came into money and we had unrealistic expectations. I fell into that trap badly where I thought we should be signing the proper elite players. I've learned the hard way and 5/6 years later we still have no plan.

No mate, i'm saying if Jose Bloggez then scored 10 goals from midfield he would be hailed as the signing of the century. People might moan on here on the day we signed him, but who really cares about that? If they produced the goods they'd be loved and Brands would get praised to the hilt. Possibly the 2 most universally loved Everton players of my lifetime were signed from Milwall and Sligo Rovers for a combined total of less than £2m, the most derided have pretty much all been 'big' signings who have constantly had the millstone round their neck of a big fee and big expectations, so even when they actually do pretty well it's not seen as good enough. There's absolutely no doubt at all that an unknown player who came here for a modest fee and was successful would be an absolute hero.

Which is why it needs to change mate - maybe it was wrong of me to say the whole fanbase, but theres still a majority out there who if we signed a Championship player for buttons would kick up a stink, when they could come in and outperform big money signings like Gomes etc.
