2020/21 Marcel Brands

In terms of league placement, we've got less competitive since he's become DoF. We've finished 12th and 10th since he was promoted to the board.

I've spent years defending him, encouraging patience - he was very clear he needed time to shift out players to create space to rebuild and he was right - but it's crunch time now.

Would he have got the job in 2018 if he pitched we'd finish 8th, 12th, and 10th? Unlikely.

I also think he's added to the problem of the bad attitude of this team. Stop signing players who signed as a last resort. We mess about with players like Magalhaes forever. Mina (waited and waited until there was no other offer on the table), Kean (since admitted he didn't want to leave Juventus, his team), Iwobi leaving his team in Arsenal to come here to setup his own company and cry about his best position - not to mention Delph, Bernard etc

He seems to like going cap in hand to big clubs and solving their problems for them.

Three years in, there is very little sign of original scouting from him, or a process that unearths those players.

I'd much rather this summer we signed relative unknowns as at least they might have potential, unlike Iwobi, Delph etc.

That story that did the rounds after Delph signed, about how meticulous Brands was in visiting him at his home, putting videos together on how he would fit into the team etc, was as much of a joke then as it is now.

Where is this attention to detail in signing players for half or less what we'd pay a PL or Championship club for, but turn out to be twice as good?

This is my major issue with him. He makes very obvious signings who are at best going to be ok. For example say Mina, Doucoure. Both decent players but known quantities with high fees to match. He hasn't really made one unknown signing other than Nkonkou who is a youth player basically.

You look at teams like Lille, Porto etc. I'd rather have a similar model to them than buying the lower quality players from top 4 sides.

Tbf his only signings of this season if we're reading between the lines were Godfrey, Doucoure, Branthwaite, Nkounkou. That gives me some hope. Hopefully Carlo doesn't demand we sign any more OAPs.

I thought everyone was raving in the Summer to have Carlo make the signings and not Brands?

The fact Carlo didn't even know who Doucoure was makes me think he's only going to target experienced players he's used before.

What’s interesting is that when his contract was ending there didn’t seem to be any talk of him going elsewhere which is a telling sign given the state that some major clubs in Europe are in.

He didn't know Godfrey either. We need Brands to be identifying the quality young players and Carlo to be the reason they come here.

Get so bored of this debate over who makes what signings.

All the decisions are made together. They both decide and both get the credit (or the pelters).
