2020/21 Marcel Brands

One of my biggest criticisms of Brands is that there's no pattern of player he is choosing. It's a very scattergun approach to buying players which defeats what a DoF is meant to do entirely. They are the ones who are meant to be the constant when managers come and go so having an identity should have been his first remit which, frankly, I've got no idea what it is meant to be.

I'm wasn't keen on silva , thought he was extremely overrated but nobody ever talks about how brands undermined him through ghastly signings its usually how is carlo supposed to perform with such a shambolic squad? But until recently brands role in the heinous squad is usually obscured with most of the ire aimed at walsh. He spent 8.5 million on delph I just thought he was acquired on a free he paid a fee , an actual fee for the motivational speaker who gives most of his inspirational speeches from the treatment room. Basically the point is the dude is turd

Probably because as times ticked on we realise more and more how shambolic it is. Id guess it wouldnt matter if it was ancelotti or any other manager after silva.
Brands does scare me though. I see virtualy zero that suggests he should be trusted.

By pretty much most metrics he’s failing in his role at this stage. Although there’s stuff I must be missing as 1) they just awarded him a new contract and 2) I’m just a biff on the internet. In such a competitive high stakes market as the Premier League I’d be surprised if the man bankrolling him affords yet another season of this under performance.

Needs to up his game and sign players with the correct profile and attitude. Hungry players who want to win stuff.

Tbf with Brands there is a pattern of player he's after, Carlo's pulling power has enabled us to go after a couple of golden oldies which was probably agreed by all to try and fast forward to Europe. It very nearly worked and if it hadn't of been for covid/injuries it probably would have.

We were forced back to Gylfi and Davies who were pre-Brands and that in turn made Gomes useless. Again everything isn't rosy but it's not the desperate situation it's made out to be either. The hope is with the next lot of players they have a bit more quality and shunt the rest down to being squad types instead of going back to the same team that saw off Silva's aspirations too.

Disagree that they make Gomes look useless. Gomes is terrible, one of the worst midfielders in the league.

Iwobi: 55 Games / 2 Goals / 2 Assists
Gomes: 47 Games / 0 Goals / 1 Assist
Delph: 24 Games / 0 Goals / 0 Assists

Almost £70m worth of ‘talent’ excluding all the undeserved wages they’ve drained of the club. Yet that warranted a new 3 year deal. Any other employee who achieved something similar at another club would have been booted and permanently banned from the premises.

Yeah its odd we have accumulated such a bunch of players who seemingly do nothing, not even assist the assister.

I would hope the club would look down the stats list this year and tell anyone who hasn't contributed that they are free to find other clubs.

That might leave us with 3 players... but still

It's disgraceful. I don't know how anyone can go into a board meeting and defend that.

The worry at Everton is probably nobody has ever pointed it out.

That's one of the reasons we don't have directors with external industry experience.

There would be blood all over the floor.

What happens when you keep on Bill Kenwright and not appoint a serious businessmen as chairman/CEO

I completely get the clamour for young low price championship players with a point to prove. We’ve had far too many duds who didn’t want to play for us littering our team.

What I would also say though is that the best Everton players of this and recent seasons have been Gueye James Richarlison Digne Godfrey Calvert Lewin. Before he was injured Docuoure was also being hyped as a potential player of the season.

There’s a mix there of players from every background: luxury free transfer, expensive prem up and comer, unknown championship kid we developed, good players in relegation teams, unwanted player from Europe’s top teams.

So it’s not just about a certain profile of player. There’s attributes we’re obviously not scouting for that we need to. All these player have (or had) hunger to play well. We’ve got far too many players without this. But there’s also a base level of quality as well required. I don’t doubt Tom Davies or Coleman work hard but they’re just not good enough now.

That’s why I wouldn’t immediately discount links to players at top European clubs. Yes they might be a dud like Gomes, but our two outstanding creative players are James and Digne both bought by this route and in the big games they are the ones more often than not along with Richalrison making the difference. That’s why the character of the player is so important. They both had something to prove whereas players like Schneiderlin Siggurdson Williams Iwobi Delph seemingly didn’t.

People ask what the root of our problems are and in essence this is it.

We are talking millions of pounds of outlay here for pretty much nothing in return and not only is that tolerated, the architect as he calls himself gets a contract extension.

I've seen management cultures like this myself - if nobody calls anyone out then everybody's job is safer.
