Just been awful all round.
This sums it all up. I feel like I have to keep reiterating that I'm not saying Brands isn't blameless because he has made some dubious (poor) decisions.
But, I can't shake the feeling that he's been one part of a massively dysfunctional system - '
too many cooks spoil the broth' comes to mind.
Moshiri is making the managerial decisions, they choose the style of play (compare Silva, Carlo and Benitez) and we suspect they've bought players too.
We don't have a philosophy in terms of our style of football, so players have mainly been purchased ad-hoc to suit the whims and desires of said managers.
It's purely conjecture of course, but while we've needed a right back last year we prioritised on Allan, Doucouré, James and Olsen - fees and wage allowance.
That's not saying they were poor signings, but we've stretched the pot. This year, our limited pot was spent on bringing Gray, Townsend, Begović and Salmon.
Again, two of those have arguably been good signings although it makes me wonder whether our obvious need for a RB hasn't been a financial priority.
We could say that Brands as the DoF has been a failure for allowing and facilitating this, yet all of the above means we're unsure how much of a say he has.
Basically, I'm unsure how much blame lies at his feet as on the face of it you could blame many of our failings on him or hardly any - it lies on who has the power.
We have no philosophy, direction or long-term plan and this comes from the youth system to the top. If Brands isn't allowed to do his job, we don't need a DoF.
If Brands hasn't done his job properly, we don't need him. However, if Brands is removed and a new DoF is brought in will our dysfunctional approach change?
I keep looking up to the board for not setting clear parameters and abiding by them.
