Marcel Brands

The same thing has happened to Brands as what happened to Walsh with Koeman. Gettting overruled by egotistical managers. He’s made some bad signings but also made some good ones but he’s not solely to blame in this debacle. There more to this, Like it’s not all down to Benitez but he is short termist and he probably won’t risk blooding young players if it saves him. Just like Ancelloti didn’t. No wonder we lost that promising 17year old left back to Southampton. We need everyone at the decision making level of the club pulling in the same direction but it looks like everyone are preserving their own positions at the detriment of the club. I know you can’t stand him but he’s not the main problem in my opinion. If that means taking a backwards step to take 2 forward steps that’s the pain we have to endure.
Here it is for me: if he;s not allowed to do his job then why has he signed up for another 3 years?

He's a con merchant and he's a major part of the problem.

I think it's just a terrible model right now. We've employed like 6 managers in 5 years with VASTLY different styles of football. If we go back to the Moyes model of "let the manager bring in whomever" we are going to be just as bad if not worse than we are now. The idea of a DoF is sound in an era which a manager gets about a year. Whatever the issue is with Brands, whether he's awful at his job or just being overridden, we need SOME semblance of a long term strategy.

Then again, literally nothing about this club has indicated they know what they are doing next week much less next year.
I actually agree almost entirely with you. However, context is important. Going back to the Moyes model involves going back to the last time the club had a model that was actually sustainable and worked.

Put simply, I more trust these jokers to implement something old that they used to do than to rip it up and start on a new concept again.

It is difficult to know just exactly what is going on at the club.

The run of recent poor results is not the fault of Marcel Brands , unless he has been meddling in team selection which I doubt.

He certainly is responsible in no small way for us having a small squad , an expensive squad and a squad with purchases that are just not good enough.
However, to be fair to him he has spent a lot of time moving on players signed before he came to the club who were also misfits.

Benitez is responsible for the poor results but has been badly hampered by a crippling injury list to key players. I do feel that any other manager would get far more sympathy and patience from the fans than RB.... for obvious reasons.
He is in no way responsible for the lack of depth and talent in the squad.

However, there is a transfer window opening in 28 days and we need to be active.
If Brands and Benitez can't work together then one has to go or the mess will just get worse.

However, at this late stage you would expect that targets have been identified, agents spoken to and probably clubs contacted about the possibility of players being made available.... it seems very late in the day to find out they cannot work as a team.

If Brands is being overruled regarding the purchase of players and the appointments of managers then what is his role ?

Fair point but I can’t influence everything that goes on in my workplace. It doesn’t mean I’m gonna resign. I do the best I can with tools at my disposal. Does that make me a con man?

Your job description presumably doesn't expect you to reshape the whole organisation. His does. And that's why he gets the big bucks.
Ok that’s a fair argument but I don’t think he’s been given the authority since Ancelloti arrived. Our football model would always be non existent with big name managers. Especially in the position we are in because they wouldn’t accept it. If we get rid of brands maybe we remove the DOF altogether because the club aren’t mature enough to put this in place. The only way it would have a chance of working is if we got demoted to the championship. We could then remove slot of deadwood and rebuild properly. At the moment it feels like we distinguish one fire and another starts. I don’t know how you feel about that but it’s a huge job. I don’t think the best manager in the world can do it alone. We need a team of people pulling in the same direction and knowing what’s needed but I just can’t see fan demonstrations changing it. We need some transparency of where we are going but there is no chance of that with our board.

My take on Brands' role is he is either

1.Not able to do the job due too interference, in which case we are wasting money on his wage.

2. Incompetent at his job. Buying overpriced players who aren't fit for purpose and can'tbe sold on, in which case we are wasting money on his wage.

Whichever the case I'm ok with him moving on, but he shouldn't be the only one out the door.

Whether you feel that Brands has been sidelined or not there are 2 key issues which for me are unexplainable and inexcusable:

1: He seems unwilling or unable to sell players, instead preferring to have them soak up wages and have their contracts extended or simply expire.

2: He hasnt signed a single person from Holland. This to me makes no sense as surely any DOF will be able to pick at least a youth player with potential out...or even a coach or someone to add to the club.

“Hello DOF, would you like a fat contract extension that you don’t really deserve because you do very little?”

“No thanks, I’d prefer to take a significant pay cut to go elsewhere and keep my reputation amongst football forum users intact”

We’re stupid enough to pay him and then not let him even try to do his job properly.

Don’t blame him personally one iota for taking the cash, he’s just another symptom with the cause being further up the food chain.

Need a new DOF with some balls and the desire to come in and shake things up. No chance we get one though - that would require competent leaders making sensible decisions.
It doesn’t matter how big their balls are. If Kenwright is at the club to interfere, and if Moshiri thinks he knows better, there no point having a director of football at all.

I agree but at least we will know who is accountable, at the moment it's a mess.
Sidibe had one season and he was better than Coleman. Bernard and to a lesser extent Gomes wee fine under Silva. Bernard for me is a much better footballer than Iwobi but Carlo didn’t like him. Particularly when we had Gueye plugging the gaps. Delph was a stopgap that didn’t work because of Ghanaians freak injury. Everyone lorded Kean as the 2nd coming but he was frankly mismanaged by every manager here and he couldn’t wait to get out. He is still our player.
