Marcel Brands

As if we didn't need another glaring example of how well our club is run... We signed a DoF that our owner consistently ignored and undermined.

We'll never truly know what happened at these board meetings but it's really starting to sound like Brands was hired to get the teas and coffees in.

Watch him go and boss it at another club now that intends to give him the control and support a DoF needs to function.

Exactly. People feeling sorry for Brands is laughable. He weren’t so bothered about the clubs finances while he was sitting their collecting his millions for doing absolutely nothing. Why didn’t he stand his ground against Moshiri? Why didn’t he speak up at the board meetings?. Why didn’t he just grow a pair of balls and actually do his job?.
He'd have sat there wathcing Everrton plummet into the Championship then got off back home.

You dont have to take sides in his struggle against Benitez to completely condemn this fraud.

For me I think Moshiri initially trusted Brands but after he largely wasted £200 million under Silva's tenure he started to give more backing to whoever was manager (Carlo, Benitez).

I have no sympathy for Brands - I wish Moshiri would keep his hands off the wheel and let others run it but you cant claim Brands/Walsh haven't been the main issues at the club in recent years - Moyes is doing a good job with clueless owners at WHU because he has an eye for a top player!

This is getting said a lot lately.

What is the actual evidence we have of this being true other than it being reported in the red echo? (Who would love nothing more than to turn us against our owner).
There's been a few bits about it. Iwobi was on holiday when we went in for him. There was no pre-negotiation or scouting. I seem to remember iwobi saying he was on a boat off Dubai and had to bomb it back to shore to go for a medical and sign paperwork.

Iwobi was on holiday in Dubai
We were on the last day of the transfer window
Moshiri clearly wanted to 'make a splash' with a late signing as the window had been average at best
Arsenal connections and Kia Joorabchian, his best man involved.

Surely that's enough

If that was the case then maybe Brands should have resigned and not taken a place on the Board. He seemed quite content with what was going on.

I think the bigger issue is a lack of cohesiveness and shared vision.
I genuinely do not believe there has been a single time since Moshiri joined that the board, manager, DoF (and all hierarchies within the club from youth to first team) have been on the same page.
I understand the need for shared responsibilities within modern football but it only works when everyone is working collaboratively towards the same end goal.
Moshiri has done well enough to secure the new stadium - I can't deny that - although given how much of his ownership is under scrutiny these days I have to wonder if that won't suffer at some point as well.
But in all other aspects the club has declined since he became involved.

Whatever his story, he was here since 2018.

He was promoted to the board;

“Our approach now is to have a Director of Football with a broader remit, responsible for the whole footballing strategy at the Club, rather than just player recruitment. Marcel is now responsible, and accountable, for delivering the long-term, holistic, football strategy and principles, from Academy through to the first team. Marcel has now begun his work on delivering the club's long-term, permanent football strategy, working closely with the Academy Director (Joel Waldron) and Head of Football Strategy (Richard Battle).”

Any inbound transfer, is directly attributed to him as Director of Football. That's the crux of it.

Players like Doucoure and Godfrey, who Ancelotti admitted he hadn't heard of. That was Marcel Brands. To players like Iwobi.

He signed a new deal in April 2021.

Either he's been a nodding puppet happy to put his name publicly to activity he's publicly accountable for which is the worst criticism you can aim at him - a criticism I don't think is fair as it criticises his integrity without knowing the facts.

or he's just not got on with Benitez since he come in 30th June.

or Moshiri has made a call that Brands hasn't delivered/underperforming.

or Marcel Brands decides to jib it.

It likely a mixture of a few.

I would agree with that.
Maybe the money was too good to refuse or maybe he felt a board position with more power was the only way to make changes.
The whole thing seems to have been a waste of time and money.
