Marcel Brands

Can someone clarify what that fraud Steinssons job is too please? Poached from Fleetwood 3 years ago and you can tell. There’s a clear breakdown in the recruitment team, managers choosing players rather than DOF or scouting recommendations.
This is something which has worried me wasn't there a story about Steinsson recently and the way a player was spoken too or it come out about him.

Brands should be revolutionising our scouting - if anything its gotten worse.

Bailey has been watched by the club over 15 times in the last 2 years... lol lol why bother if you're not even attempting to sign him.

Whole club is being run poorly.

Brands was supposed to be brought in to revolutionise the club from academy upwards and break the mould of spending terribly on overrated over-aged duds. We haven’t produced one single player capable of breaking into the first team in about 10 years, by the sounds of it we don’t even look like we have any coming through the ranks now and others are jumping ship due to lack of opportunities. I obviously don’t expect him to sort that out within a couple of years but there’s no sign of any change what so ever since he arrived.

A lot of people at the club seem to be getting paid for jobs they’re not very good at doing, or jobs for the lads because they once wore the shirt as a player... not good enough.

Just had a look and apparently Steinsson was promoted to 'Head of Recrutiment & Development' a couple years ago. Nothing about it on official channels. How has he gotten that position? What experience does he have that fits that role?

The contracts of Sigurdsson, Delph, Gomes & James all run out next summer as well.

It's entirely within the realms of possibility that the lack of significant activity was foreseen as, considering the summers we've had since Koeman's first, something had to give in terms of shifting focus to trimming the squad rather than adding significant quality to it. If Gray, Townsend & Rondon turn out to be handy players over the course of the full season then that can be seen as a net positive.

For me, what doesn't especially help matters is just how quiet the club seems to operate over transfer windows. I'm not even talking about stuff in relation to transfers themselves, but just about our strategy in general. As it stands, no one has an absolute scooby what the actual remit of this summer was so naturally everyone's heads have fallen off.

I'd like to hear from Brands again, personally. He needs to properly clarify his position because naturally questions are being asked at this point.

The only thing I can say in Brands' defense is that he has had to work with different managers who have different ideas and player wishlists that he needs to accommodate. That being said I imagine all of those managers would've liked another right back to cover/take over from Coleman and his failure in this is mind boggling to me. Otherwise a successful window for me when taking ffp into account.

At this point, I genuinely believe that the staff at the club rate Seamus more highly than the fans do at this point. All of them, Benitez included, probably still reckon he's good for first choice RB for another season at least.

Yeah it was in the news at the time he was doing something at Fleetwood (that amazingly successful club with great recruitment)... Brands had this to say;

“He's like a pitbull, if he sees something and wants something he goes for it, which is a little bit like my character,” Brands said.
“I like to have those kind of people around me because I have done a lot of transfers in the past where people have said: 'That is impossible' and even now, the people didn't expect players from Barcelona."

Man watches Bailey 15 times in the last 2 years and still doesn't do anything.

Ironically he was a RB in his playing career, maybe he is looking for a game and is therefore deliberately not scouting RB's!

Is right. I think of course we've been looking at that area and tried to get in players that fit the bill but for one reason and another they haven't come off so the club have decided to go with what they have. I'm sure if we desperately wanted any RB they could have got one but to them the priority was in another position.

If we are not going 100% with the dof model then we should dispense with it ,it's either one or the other

…in our case, I’m sure he’s in charge of scouting network & makes suggestions to the Manager but ultimately Benitez is running the show.

Some on here want a Manager in charge of player recruitment & this appears to be what’s happening.

The RB position has been a right stumbling block.

First of all we could perhaps have managed it better but lack of funds has been the big probleme as we have been unable to meet the asking price set by clubs who have had RBs we wee interested in.

In this window two we were looking at:-

Patterson, but there was no way Gerrard was goung to let him come to us, kept upping the price so that was a no go.

Naitland-Miles I think was never on, he was using our interest as a means of getting a better deal with his club which he got. We were used as a means of blackmail.

So do not think this has been a failing by Brands.

Nah, Leeds are just ridiculous for paying that much in the first place, let's be honest.

That said, I reckon he'll suit them.

Young, well sort after (PSG, Juve, Inter all supposedly interested). Played for PSG last season and scored plenty. Juve have just sold their main striker, a 36 year old, for 20mil. A 2 year loan with a buy option is laughable.

Well obviously not, considering we struggled to shift him out for all intents and purposes.

The deal we got off Juve in the end, considering the circumstances both clubs are currently operating under, was objectively a good one.
