I'll put a defence, and it's some devils advocate here. Relative to the rest if the league, we havent spent that much. In his 4 seasons here we have spent 11th most net and gross. He came the summer after Koeman/Allardyce when things were in a right mess.

My criticism of him is not necessarily of his spending. It's that I'm not entirely sure what he does. We seem to have recruited a lot better when we have let 2 experienced managers pick players, or have a bigger say IMO.

Mate, he’s bought some absolute garbage, sanctioned big contracts and his academy “expertise” has produced F All. He’s as bad, if not worse than Walsh and needs booting.

Totally agree with your point on managers making signings. That makes his role void and we need to do away with it IMO.
 

Hard to see what authority he has when we sign Gray, Rondon, Begovic and Townsend who are all Benitez choices.

Also, the players which Ancelotti brought in such as James and Allan dont fit the supposed 'profile' we had been told was the 'strategy'.

Doucoure and Godfrey last summer were solid signings by Brands...but the bloke seems to be totally unable to see what positions need filling and if he misses out on a target the next choice has a different profile and skillset...disjointed.

The worst part with him is that he is incapable of selling his own players.
 

Brands has had an almost impossible job trying to clear up the Walsh/Koeman mess. OK he's made a really bad buy in Iwobi and 2 that have turned that way in Gbamin and Delph. However in the summer pretty much all the garbage that he didn't sign will be gone so it will be all on him from there. He really needs to get the right players in.
