This is the 'best' side we can put out:

Pickford
Coleman Mina Godfrey Digne
Doucoure Allan
Townsend Richarlison Gray
DCL

If we had two top players on the right hand side then we'd actually have a very strong first eleven.

The concern is that if any of those 9 players picks up an injury or a suspension the drop off to their replacement is enormous.

Mina's contract shouldnt have been allowed to get down to 1.5 years. I hope that its been extended before the summer.

If we can just get into the top 6 this season then we may be able to kick on in terms of team/squad building...but id not be surprised if certain players wanted to leave next summer if we dont make Europe.

I agree with that team. However I think 4-3-3 is better suited to our players so it's a choice between Gray and Richarlison and I would say we need another midfielder. I agree the right side needs upgraded. The only position we have depth is CB and on the LW. In my opinion we ideally need to sell Keane and Iwobi and bring in one more CB when Delph and Sigurdsson leave 2 new CM including the one I mentioned above. Kenny and James to go so Coleman and Townsend become back up to the new players there. LB depends on Nkounkou if he comes back ready to push Digne no one needed. If he is poor on loan we will also need a LB. GK someone in to push Pickford release Lonergan sell Virginia and Begovic to be 3rd choice.

Thr likes of tosun whose contracts are up next summer can sign pre contracts in Jan elsewhere.

The scattergun approach will no doubt continue

The big problem which is entirely on him is we don't sell anyone for a decent amount of money and the mistakes in recruitment are just left to rot and we don't generate any cash.

Walcott - 20M and left on free
Bolasie - 24M and left on free
Williams - 12M and left on free
Schneiderlin - 24M and sold for 2M
Tosun - 20M and running his contract down

He didn't sign all of them but its his job to get rid of the players who aren't good enough and replace them in the squad with better. When we sold Klassen after 12 months we got half our money back, once we know a player isn't good enough we should sell if we take a hit so be it as it's better then getting nothing and loaning them out for the remainder of the contract.

The best deal we are going to get for a player leaving in years is going to be the tribunal fee for Small!

You have to take into account no clubs were showing any interest in those nomarks also it was getting them off the wage books. Very easy to say sell a player but you need a buyer and the player has to be willing to go as in Tosun's case not willing.

Ok then what about Kenny. Burnley were interested in him last year but Brands wanted 10M and they didn't want to pay it so now we have him with less than a year on his deal and again possibly going for nothing.

Brands is not doing enough in terms of selling players.

Says who?

This is part of the problem, the media pushing rubbish thats lapped up and then considered gospel.

As I always say, people should have enough actual ammo to attack Brands, yet they always seem to come at him with garbage that has no sense of realism.

The fact remains he cant generate much cash from players and I agree its a hard job getting money and interest from those I listed so why doesn't he try something different.

Sell Holgate and promote Branthwaite would give us money to spend

Pickford could have been sold in the summer when his stock was high after the Euros and replaced for half the price

Im gonna whisper this, but in order to sell, somebody has to bid, real life isnt Football Manager, you dont place players on a transfer list and wait for offers.

I feel that while the first 11 should be competing for the top 6/8 - it’s the worst ‘squad depth we have had in a long time’.

Apart from centre backs where they are all much of a muchness - if we get an injury in any other position on the pitch we are significantly weaker. We get two/three or even four like we did on the weekend and I don’t think we are winning many games.

In hindsight- with this squad I think Benitez is 100% the right fit.

Brands has been here long enough now, so a large proportion of that is on him and I doubt many people trust him to get it right in the next window(s) when FFP shouldn’t hamper us as much.
