he isn't making any decisions

Now, I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing. He either can't do his job or he isn't being allowed to do it as he wants to. Either way, he's basically now a spare part.

I personally believe that he's far more involved than people give him credit for. It seems bizarre to say a sentence like that about the actual Director of Football and board member of the club but given the lack of transparency surrounding his position and how we operate in the transfer market, it certainly isn't conspiratorial to assume that he's on the fringes.

You are completely correct though, he's useless, whether by design or by application isn't really important as the end result is the same.

In terms of recruitment, Benitez was responsible for every signing we made this summer (as in they were players he wanted and in the case of Townsend, Begovic and Rondon, he basically made all the calls too).

Benitez apparently didn't want any of the RB targets Brands' team came up with, and that's why we never went back in with cash for AMN too. Benitez wasn't happy about it. But it's mad that he's had 3 years and the only names he came up with were Dumfries, Patterson and AMN. All vastly different styles and profile of player, too.

It does sound proper mad to say but it's like he's either useless or just not getting his way at all. There has to be give and take but still. He is ultimately responsible while his title is DoF. Maybe they should just change his role.

If the manager is the one calling the shots on transfers, what's the point? It's there with Rondon. An over the hill journeyman who while, yes, in theory is able deputy to DCL, is completely unfit, and hasn't even got the base fitness of some top-level footy to work on as he has been in China and Russia for two years hardly playing amid a pandemic. Yet Benitez really wanted him from the start.

As mental as it was for us to not sign a right back, for 7 consecutive windows, when it’s been clearly obvious.
He managed to shift NKounkou, so now Digne is injured, Coleman is injured and Holgate and Keane are garbage it leaves us with an out of form Godfrey and Mina as our defence, with no full backs.

Inexcusable.

I said at the time, and I’ll say it again. We had a competent backup on the bench already in Josh along and we let him go.

Cause Brands wouldn’t replace , we’ve had to scrape the barrel and get an overweight, unfit and hugely lacking sharpness striker in Rondon.

It’s just abysmal.

Tbf though we went for Rondon just after Benitez was appointed (or around the time we went for Townsend and Gray)

It's like RB had fixated that he wanted him.

I'm not slating RB for that. In theory it's a decent signing for the right amount who was always going to need time but we wasted all summer when we could have gone and got someone in.

Honestly, if we just wanted a back up striker to give us what Rondon does, but someone who has actually been playing in England and not dossing it off in China/Russia, then we should have gone and got Austin on a free.

I’d err towards the side of him being useless, because he’s been here 3 years and we’ve seen what he’s been able to build in that time.

Nothing against Rondon, I’m sure he’ll get better once he actually gets in shape and gains some fitness.

But we’ve had to sign him on deadline day because we’re exceptionally short up top.

Why would you not keep the Centre Forward we barely tried. Whether he was everyone’s cup of tea or not is irrelevant, he’d have been a better option last night and against Villa, Josh King, just baffling on our behalf.

Well I guess because the decision to let King go was made while Carlo was here?

I just think Brands is rubbish at his job mate, and I think he knows it too. When Silva was manager, Brands seemed to put forward every signing apart from Richarlison (Doucoure too, who we obviously tried to get but would later end up signing).

Since we've had Carlo and Benitez, the only senior player who doesn't appear to have been suggested by either manager is Godfrey. It represents a big change in approach from what it was like before.

It reminds me somewhat of Koeman's first season when we got to January and our season was stuttering and he flexed his muscles publicly to say he wanted Morgan Schneiderlin and questioned why Walsh hadn't done the deal yet. A few days later Schneiderlin rocks up.

We basically have the same situation here I think: big name manager, small time DoF.
