That's why I've never been a fan of the DOF model. It creates too much ambiguity and strands of responsibility and no one is quite sure what their role covers. At least with the old system of a manager running the entire football side of a club, you knew exactly who was accountable.

The model isn't the problem. On paper, on his contract, it will specify exactly his areas of responsibility.
As with any business, the only way that gets disrupted is from above. You can't turn around to owners or more senior executives and say no. By all accounts the guy is no bullshit, doesn't shy from speaking it like it is (/Dutch). Once that's been said, if your boss still insists, then you do what they say. (edit: or you leave)
The issue is Kenwright and Moshiri. Though if the Benitez appointment succeeds through Benitez signings it doesn't really leave Brands with much to do, does it?

Just read the article and found it pretty interesting. Although it probably didn't tell us much we didn't already know. There are far too many people involved in the decision making process at the club, and no one is quite sure what their personal remit is.

The DoF model doesn't do any of this.

Ours does because there are too many fingers in pies.

To me it looks like that article (amongst many other damning things levelled at him) is saying that Brands has been sidelined by managers and the owner and Kenwright from first team recruitment and has busied himself instead with making an utter nuisance of himself at other levels oif the club with U23 and youth team affairs.

Will someone just do the decent thing here and hand this feller his cards and get him out of the club ASAP.
Yes hand him his cards while moshiri and his pally agent, plus kenwright are all still involved. Thankfully it looks like Rafael is on the ball with transfers

If you think Brands has failed, then fair enough. But Moshiri has failed by keeping certain people around and being influenced by agents

Agreed. It’s a failure to put in place the proper structures at the club. Kenwright’s role should be ceremonial and Moshiri should stay well away from on the field matters. Leave it up to the DoF. He is accountable and if it doesn’t work out then he will get his p45.

I think I would feel far more comfortable with Brands and have far more faith in him and the job he’s doing if he came out and communicated with the fans more and I’m not suggesting he should be telling us what he’s doing day to day or who he’s trying to sign or anything like that but just general interviews about the club, how players are adapting and things like that. He’s the face of the club in many ways and has been a constant during several seasons of uncertainty and it would be nice to actually get to know what he’s like as a person and warm to him. We’ve all seen his CV, we’ve been told what his skill set is and from the limited knowledge we have of what he actually does and what goes on behind the scenes at the club it’s very easy for us all to create a narrative that suits our agendas (whether you’re anti-Brands and you think he’s part of the problem or pro-Brands and you think he’s not being allowed to be the solution)
I don’t dislike Brands, I just don’t know him. Regardless of whether I liked them or not I felt like I knew Carlo (the backstabbing snake, you broke my heart), I feel I know who Rafael Benitez is. The whole country knew what kind of character Allardyce was, we sussed out Koeman pretty quickly and Martinez embraced that connection with the fans… it helps. By comparison the club never really allowed us to get to know the real Marco Silva. In pressers he was dull and lacking any charisma at all but apparently – according to the few people I know that met him he was actually a lovely charming guy. The same might be true of Brands but we don’t know.

Having read the article , it’s more damning of our Club than Brands. An outsider saying he has to phone three people to get a decision on a player, Brands having to work with 3 managers of different styles and no doubt different views on what a DoF should do and something we all recognise, we are a comfortable, cozy club for any player. Brands has tried to change that and the bit about the high wages and contracts we gave to u23s that Brands got rid of is telling - a Championship squad almost in terms of wages.

His biggest failure for me is in not getting in a right back. Then you read the article and it makes a bit more sense as to why he hasn’t completed this. There’s no doubt Brands has struggled to achieve what we hoped he’d achieve, but the biggest failures in the past few years have been our owner and our Chairman.

Yeh it's hard to even argue sacking him if he's not really in control of his own job. Can judge him for not leaving but then again, got to get paid.

I knew there was more to it. Fans blamed him for every signing that didn't work out and praised anyone else when it went right.

Now it looks like we've done a classic Everton move, ballsed up the simple things. Either let the man do his job and judge him fairly or get rid.

A structure supposedly put in place to stop the past mistakes of Walsh, koeman, moshiri, kenwright all having an input on recruitment hasn't really changed so the same mistakes and gaps in the squad will continue to happen
