I'm suggesting all periods of PL Everton's transfer history has some good buys and some awful buys. Let's not pretend it was all rosey under Moyes/Martinez. Some shocking purchases were made.
The scale of the losses in the last 5 years are off the charts. There is no comparison with a DoF era of spending and the manager making the decisions alone on spending era.

I suspected from day one that the role would be a disaster. It has been.

We need to scrap the role.

It's all relative though. Bogus signings like Kroldrup, van der Meyde, Kone, Nyarko etc. don't look as bad because of the low fee but respect to the available funds they were just as bad as spending £20m odd on a Klaassen.

Leaving signings down to just a manager, in a football world where managers last around 2 years, is so short-sighted it's negligent.

Was looking at some of the value Comobs, Delph and Gbamin, really have been stinkers in terms of contribution for £35 mill and probably North of 150k a week.

That’s before you factor in the cost of having to buy additional central midfielders because of them.

Some of the value of these deals are really bad.

That only makes sense if we had a consistent style of play in place that made the changing of managers almost immaterial - we dont. This DoF has not created that style of play.

That Athletic article yesterday stated that Brands was "shocked" at the wages paid to the existing staff when he arrived. But he went on and made it even crazier.

There's briefing going on about Brands at the moment and hopefully it means there are moves to shift him out. There's no way Benitez will work with Brands IMO.

Very true , Moshiri has thrown money at the problem in his 5 years, but Brands has only been here for 3 years.

In the last two years Brand’s biggest impact seems to have been sorting out the mess . Did he contribute to the mess along with a series of poor managerial decisions? Undoubtedly. The real blame for the “disaster “ lies with Moshiri, Kenwright and a series of managers changing direction each time. It may not be much of a compliment to Brands but we’re less of a mess than we could have been. Which of our recent managers would have got rid of so much deadwood, and the whole system of players at U23s/18 is now completely different than it was 3 years ago ? There is a huge amount of things still requiring fixing , I’m hoping for a period of relative stability to do these changes rather than the turmoil we seem to go through every year or so.

He really has mismanaged budgets and thus we were stuck in the mud in terms or recruitment progress in the summer. In the real world if your responsible for managing a budget, in this case transfer flow and scope from season to season and you end up that the business can’t progress due to you not managing that budget, your out on your ear. You don’t get a junket to Florida to give Seamus Coleman a birthday cake. There is a lack of cold ruthlessness at the club.

What’s the deal with the briefing mate, a review of the role? Seems a bit mad to have handed him a new contract in that case.

Agreed the manager is an autocrat, always has been always will be despite what he says publicaly. The other thing he won’t tolerate is a lack of funds he went to war with Mordor, Newcastle and Inter over that very issue.

But a DoF is supposed to know all that when taking the job on and a good one would only take it if he had cast iron assurances hed be left alone to get the job done.

There's no way you can cut this that makes a case for Brands.

He might have been given those assurances though; you don't know till you start the job.

You can levy it at him why would he not leave if his role is restricted but he's paid handsomely so got to get the bills paid.

Well what the Athletic said was “ Kenwright often greases the wheel with a personal touch “ ….” Kenwright s interventions have been decisive in securing first-team stars to new contracts” . Do you really believe that Bill was actively cutting back on spending , hes everybody’s friend , I seriously doubt he didn’t have a big hand in making wages crazier. The Athletic also says that Brands “ saved millions by offloading some of that overpaid group “ of U23s . It’s a balanced article if used correctly instead of selectively against Brands.

Well, I'm looking at the recent upsurge of articles about Brands and hoping there's a review.

Brands: if there's anyone still handing him the benefit of the doubt out there they need to look at the bench at this club - after 5 years of spending half a billion we are running on fumes beyond a core of 12 or 13 players.

It's failure on an epic scale. It has to be met with the sack.

Then the DoF doesn't have the character we need to get the job done.

And, yes, that article threw Brands a few bones but was good in the sense it sketched out the overal lack of command that any DoF would insist on having, but Brands has been cowed into relinquishing every function he had at the club bar tinkering with the U23s and youth level.

Why do you always talk about 5 years and Brands in the same sentence when you know full well 2 of those years he wasn't here and they were an absolute horror show.
