One thing I still can’t get my head around was his trip back to Holland before the season started.

Could not have been more than to see his friends and family. Multiple reports basically confirming he was there to secure some signings (grand total of 0, in the end) and that he needed to quarantine when he got back to the UK. The signings never came and you can’t tell me he was there just to finalise Markelo’s move back home.

I was thinking about just this last week for some reason, and the last person in football who behaved with this kind of dignity was Kevin Keegan - in the toilets at Wembley, ironically enough. He was lampooned for it, vilified. Yet, here was a hugely successful person simply accepting that he wasn't cut out for a particular job. I think that takes a lot of courage and honesty. People won't admit it, but they secretly prefer the incompetent, but bloated, buffoon approach - Boris Johnson - to the honest Keegan approach. It's cheapened discourse.

He's definitely part of the furniture now at Everton, one of the gang. Moshiri has never suffered fools at this club, Walsh and every manager who had drastically underperformed were fed to the hounds very quickly.

So why has this guy lasted? He's failed at every single task a DoF could be expected to perform. And it looks like he's here for as long as he wants to be.
