Marcelo Bielsa

Just don't see him coming, or it working, mid season. He didn't even like signing players in January as it would take too long for them to be trained up to scratch.

I agree on pretty much every count you say.

But this is Everton, so he will probably end up here now.

In general with our board, think of the most unlikely and ludicrous thing to do, that's the place they end up. Sort of a weird reverse Occums Razor.

Leeds fan here, you get this man you will see the best football you have seen since Sharp scored that goal at Anfield... Don't listen to the woke people and the media, I for one want him back in the Premier league to prove everyone wrong.

Very kind of you to say mate, our squad is just not set of for Bielsa at all though.

I think everyone would sign up to going down and a guaranteed immediate return with better prospects. It just isn't possible to guarantee.

If we had Bielsa here and we took the drop he'd be pitchforked.

We are far better off going for a possible quick fix of wither Moyes or Dyche.
I get what you’re saying Dave but if things don’t change. we will eventually go down regardless. Moyes Or Dyche aren’t guaranteed to keep us up and will we be in the same boat next season. This club needs a cultural change someone to rip it up because what we have been doing isn’t working and hasn’t been for a long time. I really don’t want relegation but I don’t see a quick fix working either. Am at a lose really and I think the club are they don’t have a plan they seem to just hope for the best.

Just answering your points form our experience

1) yes Bielsa only does 1 year contracts, which was always a bit of a frustration in planning long term as it was season to season.
2) There is no compromise with Bielsa, he has his way of doing things and sticks to it 100%. That's what led to his ultimate downfall with us, even when it was obvious a few tweaks were needed when things were starting to go wrong, he refused to budge.
So why do all these top level managers say he's a genius? If his plan b is just more of plan a?

Don't get me wrong, I'm warming to the idea..... But inflexibility at this level is suicide.

I suppose 'flawed genius' is the best way of describing him. His belief is that if you have a plan B it reduces confidence in Plan A and if things aren't working, you just need to execute Plan A better.
He gave us the best 3 seasons in our recent history, the style of football was incredible and the contrast from the squad he inherited to their performance in his first match in charge was just unbelievable, with pretty much the same players-that I would describe as genius.
But.... the same 100% belief in his way of doing things ultimately led to his downfall.
So, if you go down, I would be very excited if I was an Everton fan (and jealous as Leeds fan) about the prospect of him turning things around for you. But mid-season, I couldn't see it working.

Thanks for your insight mate, it's a welcome addition to have the context of Bielsa.

In a lot of ways, having 1 approach that you stick to mechanically is quite high risk. When it works well, it goes really well. Leeds at times looked unplayable under him, but when it goes wrong, it can be disastrous. I think youd have gone down under him last season. He had probably exhausted your players, and with our lads it would likely be worse.

The problem with the above analogy is everyone in theory likes the idea of accepting bad games for good ones. Until you are in the midst of it, and you get relegated. I suppose it's what makes the PL so hard. It's not like being at say Athletic Club in Spain, where if they have a bad season they come 14th or whatever. In this country you go down.

Yep, when it worked it was a thing of beauty, which is why he was so loved (and is equally still well loved at all his former clubs).
I agree, if we hadn't changed managers last season we'd have gone down as things had clearly stopped working (though other fans would disagree).
And yes the problem was that players were exhausted after 4 years of his methods, players were injured left, right and centre and his desire of having a small squad meant not enough back ups. It's also arguable that we'd been found out to some extent, teams worked out how to play us.
Having said all that, the first 3 years under him were special, he got us promoted after 16 years in the wilderness and gave us the 3 best years in our recent history.
To rebuild a club, change the mindset and way of doing things, there is none better, even if his teams ultimately have a shelf-life.
