It was a tactical horror show yesterday, no doubt at all. The full backs played too high, allowing Son huge spaces on the flanks to receive the ball and start running at our centre backs. Gomes and Davies didn't have a clue who they were supposed to be tracking, or which spaces they had to close off. There was no were near enough work from our wide players either in helping back. Total suicide football.
Talk of sacking him however is completely premature. We aren't touching the top 6 this season (look at the gulf in quality yesterday) and even if we finish 7th, we're going to have a period of poor form. The horror show at Anfield has had a huge impact on us and several players in the team, Pickford most of all. There have been very positive signs in some games this season, we were excellent at the Emirates and Anfield, pretty good at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge and we probably created more clear cut chances at Manchester City than any other side in the league will manage this season. Even yesterday if it wasn't for yet another top 6 status quo referee, we would have gone 2-0 and maybe Spurs wouldn't have recovered from that?
We're a work in progress, we have a good team but it's not a patch on the top 6 sides in the league. Our points return has been disappointing but it's really a consequence of the last 5 games, we were all feeling very positive about this side before this run. Silva needs to do what Martinez was completely incapable of doing and that is being able to turn around poor form. Martinez couldn't reverse poor spells of form of 4-5 games and they would extend in to season killers. If Silva can't do it either he will go the same way, which would be a great shame.
