It's not him, it's the role. For me the manager has to be the decision maker on all aspects of the playing side of a club. Obviously it will depend on size of organisation. I wouldn't expect Man Utd or Real Madrid's managers having complete control. Even Fergie relied on Kenyon/Gill. For Everton though, that should be manageable...as it was for Moyes/Martinez. DoF is a spare arse part of a job at a club this size. I mean, WTF does Brands do outside signing players? He cant even sell most of the ones he has to get off the wage bill....and he doesn't "do" January windows!

...yep, I don’t entirely disagree but Moyes was a workaholic. There was hardly a game on TV at any level where the camera didn’t cut to him sitting in the stand. I think, though, that this league has become more global and players can be picked up from a wide range of markets. It’s more difficult for a manager to keep abreast.

I can see the logic of having a DoF, but having the right one is the absolute key. The scope of the managers role is then more concentrated on playing strategy and tactics.

So you believe they were planning to keep him if he finished 7th or higher but decided to sack him as he just finished 8th?

no

he was sacked either because they always planned to sack him OR because he was despised by the fans and the football was shocking. or a bit of both

not because he finished 8th, and its silly to suggest this

If he finished 7th or higher there is no reason to sack him because he delivered results. For me if a manager can deliver results I don’t care if the football is dull or not.

He was despised by the fans because he is BFS. He was employed to put the fire out and he did his job.

And to hope a manager can deliver with no record to back him up is called blind faith. The situation now is a bit like Martínez second season although I agree Silva should get this season at least.

Yes he was employed to do a job, which he duly did, yet it was the results after that and the direction of the club as a whole which rightly caused him to be axed.

Obviously results are hugely important but on the other hand we're there to be entertained. Did you sit through Sam's games? Did you feel the atmosphere?

I've been going to Goodison as a STH for decades and try my best to be calm, reasonable and objective about it; nevertheless, Sam sucked the joy out of it!

I much prefer Moyes of course. In the end results are the most important issue. I don’t enjoy having scored 2 and conceded more and lost a game.

I didn't say that, but you have this massive hard on for the guy. He's not been a success in this league with either Chelsea or Spurs. FFS, Spurs sacked him for Tim friggin Sherwood.
Imagine how good you must be to sack a manager with a 55% win rate.

What dreams are made of

@BigBlueNose

I'm pretty sure AVB always relied on one player with his sides - a bit reminiscent of what proved to be the case with Koeman.

At Spurs, it was Bale. At Porto before Chelsea, it was Falcao, etc.

Obviously, every side has a key player or two, but it seemed AVB literally never had a plan B...

And since we haven't got a star, I don't see what good he would do.
