Yes, but you either need great players or a great system. We don't have either unfortunately.
I disagree. Van Dijk is excellent, but he's not so good that he can single handedly stop a team from conceding. Clearly as well as having some very good defenders, the team is now well drilled. As the original poster was saying, we need to give our players the chance to get used to it just like they did.

I don't think I've ever seen van Dijk lose an aerial duel for Liverpool. His passing is excellent, he's a leader, dominant in the air, composed, gets forward. Really is the whole package. If only we had gone for him when he was leaving Celtic.

Burnley goal the game before. All the players standing in zones and he is on the back post unmarked.

He wasn't on the back post unmarked, he was 4 yards outside the back post, a yard or so off the lining therefore not in a dangerous area and unable to score from where he was. He headed it back across goal where we had Michael keane and the goalkeeper guarding the near post. They scored from the 2nd phase of play in that move which was a scramble inside the box.

All the way through that game against City if there was a block or clearance inside the Liverpool box, it would be Van Dijk. Lovren just got in the way. The only thing VVD is missing from his game is more goals, which he should be scoring. Gutted that there was a chance we supposedly could've had a centre half partnership of VVD and Stones.

I think you’ll find Brands is an absolute advocate of zonal marking, and it was part of the reason why Marco Silva was top of his list to recruit.

There is absolutely no way Silva is top of his list if everyone is available since MS had no previous record to suggest he could take the club forward. It’s a gamble. And I have doubt if MS was chosen by Brands.

Agreed. By now we would have sold him for a nice big profit.

Here is the thing though. The last time we had long term stability we won nothing and achieved nothing under Moyes.

In fact if then was now, Moyes would have been sacked for that second season.

The reason we need to back the manager , ie Silva, is simply because how can brands build a team for him if he was sacked after 7 months? Silva is doing the job right now with mostly other managers players in his squad. How do you know that another 4-5 players to give him his options off the bench would not turn our fortunes around?

A loose example but going back to when Messi made the breakthrough at Barcelona. The club then and went and sold deco, ronaldhinio , gudjonseen, Hebert etc just to make room for him in the team. It worked wonders for them and they regained the title and have been successful as a result.

The connection I am trying to make is that there are players at the club like Walcott, siggurdson, gueye, Coleman, lewen to name a few that are there in the team now but if Silva wanted to get rid of them for his team then he should have that chance to.

You.cant judge a manager after 6 months unless they really are struggling. Silva is bang average right now, where we have been for 4 years, so right now he is meeting expectation whether you like it or not.

Cannot contrast. Two totally different situation. We don’t have money in 2002.

I do have concerns over him because of the crap defence...incapable of keeping clean sheets and becoming crap at home...and this is alarming.

The genius went for Funes Mori instead.

It was the message it sent out.

Anyone can appoint bad managers, it happens, mistakes get made but that was actively appointing one.

It was the day we gave up on being a big club and wanting to win things. Even if it hadn’t happened for a long time we were still trying, we still had ambitions.
You don't seriously believe that do you? You can't honestly believe that it was the appointment of BFS that signled the end of us being considered a "Big club".

With all due respect mate, we haven't been a big club (whatever that actually means) with big aspirations since the early 90's. The club stopped having aspirations under Johnson and the only ambition we've ever had under Kenwright was to become also-rans and mid-table mediocrity incarnate.

If the appointment of BFS was what it took to finally wake up our fanbase to the reality of Everton Football Club then not only did his appointment do more good then harm, it was actually one of the better days in our recent history.

Not a great fan of Zonal marking but I do see the reasoning for it.
My problem is it doesnt seem to matter what system we are using its the switching off from the second ball , we have
conceded far too many this season where an opponent is left with the ball 6 yds out with Pickford glued to his line and no full backs on the posts.
Other teams have targeted it for months now , until it is sorted we will continue to concede.
I really hope this gets sorted , as I see it as a downfall ( with the lack of a striker) that could cost Silva his job.
I'd hate to see everything ripped up and another manager come in.
