I'm not trying to do Silva down but I agree. I suppose my point was, come the summer with Everton potentially having 200+ million burning a whole and a whole summer to sort out the mess we are a much more attractive prospect. Silva faces far more competition, and while he's the standout choice now it may well not be the case in the summer. I think that's why he's pushing for a move now.

Everton need to spend more than that to compete with the top four. Every top four team has a squad of superstars, a base level that each season they tweek that with another £50-£100m signing. Everton are not in this position, and although we have spent "big" last season - we overspent rather than increased the quality of the team. The players may come good, but the player bought this summer were not sort after by the elite sides. £200m+ will make us stronger, but will not put us in a position to compete for Champions League. £200m wouldnt buy us Lukaku and Stones back now.

Football fans are fickle. Imagine the Watford season follows last years trajectory (Mazzari had the same point, and though I haven't checked imagine Flores would have been close after 12 games) and they end up with 40-45 points between 13-17th. I can't imagine many Evertonians desperate for him.

Silva's stock is incredibly high right now. I agree 100%. Its nothing short of roulette which way his career will go

Hola amigo! Really pleased to see bottom feeder clubs knowledge in your lexicon. Such searing insight across all levels of the game is a sign of your humility despite it being a big Champos Liga day.

I hope the ghost gone Franco crush your very soul in this Catalan trouble right now.

Sorry, for a moment there I made the mistake of assuming you had any connection to Barcelona other than a glory hunting sugar headed condescending self adoring pisspig.

Post of the century

We attracted Mazzarri after he’d managed Inter Milan and Napoli. We attracted QSF after he’d been at Atletico Madrid and won the Europa League. Now they are actual big clubs and they still lowered themselves to our puny, no-mark standards. So I’d say our standing in the game is fine amongst knowledgable people of the game. However you like to dress it up and talk about history, right now you are as far away from winning anything as us.

...and you don't know how to treat a manager of standing and get shut. It's just too rich for your system to digest. You're better off with a steak and chips type of manager like Pulis or Alardyce and leave the sophisticated stuff to us.

Whisper it very quietly but Luton have won a MAJOR trophy (League Cup) whereas Watford have not.

Oh even Burnley having a little nibble at the Watford fans now, despite the fact they should be united in their dislike for Everton. This is tremendous stuff.

@lancyclaret Did you see a couple of pages back that @Youorns84 referred to your club and fans as a small time outfit that lucked out in this league and you'll be in the conference within 6 years?

I've tried my best to put him right but he's having none of it.

In all fairness mate you attracted QSF about 5 years after he left Madrid and had been washed up in Saudi Arabia or somewhere equivalent.

That being said you have shown a wonderful acumen of finding an impressive array of managers. In truth a recruitment net that spans far beyond our own. I'm surprised you have never tried to keep any of them to a longer contract, but I suppose given your ability to do the above I can see why you would keep things fresh.

All of this is what the point is not though. Much of this debate seems to be getting bogged down in insults on each side.

The point in this debate is that while on the face of it the two clubs look quite similar, the potential between the two is radically different. Part of the problem why this isn't accepted in the wider footballing world (and even from some Evertonians) is that the club don't communicate anything publicly.

Under Kenwright and the Everton you have seen there is little between the clubs (though for the sake factual accuracy we have always been above you). I can understand you are bemused by the comments.

However the majority shareholder has significant plans for the club, plans that are widely speculated to at some point involve some of the wealthiest individuals in the world creating a club equivalent of Arsenal in the North.

Part of the issue is most of the press Moshiri does is via private channels as is his negotiation. It means the the club aren't getting no the recognition due in the wider media and is another failing.

I appreciate your owners are very competent operators. I appreciate they are not paupers. I appreciate your view of past success is irrelevant (it actually has an impact but in ways that differ to what most toffees may first suggest) however they are not in the same category of people who are rumoured to be behind what Everton are doing.

You are a very well run club. But you are behind where Everton are currently, though in fairness I understand why you can't recognise that as the majority of the developments are behind closed doors, in a smoke and mirrors way.

Does this mean we can or will take Silva? Absolutely not. If Real Madrid came knocking you could still stand your ground until the summer. It wouldn't make you bigger than Real Madrid though.

I'm neutral on it. I can see the upside, but equally I can see the sense of allowing Unsworth to get us through the next 6 months and allow us the summer to get a decent manager in who maybe has a better pedigree than Silva.
I think Silva might get Everton progressing towards a team with the requisite style and manner of play that would lead us to get the Simeones of this world. And for that I would prefer him to Unsworth. Unsworth will avoid relegation and who knows, if all the stars align and he gets a couple of decent players in where we are lacking, what he may achieve.

Mate as I said earlier Burnley are infinitely bigger than Watford. I have a huge amount of respect for Burnley and Dyche and what they've done. They are a classy club to boot.

Agree. The top 6 are over the hills and far away now i’m afraid. Newcastle will also find this out, as they think a takeover giving them an extra hundred million to spend will get them amongst it.
It won’t.

That's a fair point mate. You are talking about buying players at the very top end of the market. If we buy players who are emerging, recruit well and coach them properly, another 200 million would help close the gap on the sides above us, and if they recruit badly maybe overtake a couple.

He'd defo give us an identity, which is important right now.

Could we do better in the summer or are we best allowing Watford to turn the screw now and hand them a big compo package?
