The sad thing is when we do develop talented youngsters, the media bang on about the need for them to leave Everton to develop!!!! See Rooney, Rodwell, stones, Barkley etc.

Not just us. A Southampton fan made a very good point regarding the 4 players that left them. Bale, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chambers. All 4 struggled to hold down a start with only Bale after a few rocky years becoming the superstar he showed glimpses of. The other 3 have rotted at Arsenal.

Man City have ruined a few promising careers with Sterling looking vulnerable after only 12 months.

Laughable really, yet as with Stones now, he will only improve if he goes to the Etihad according to the media. Even though he has one of the finest defensive players ever as his current boss!

It was only a friendly, but he was ace.
Hopefully he'll look just as assured on a wet night at the Britannia !

long way to go yet but he's also played right back (a lot more than Stones ever did/has).

Whoever leaves/we bring in, I'd rather see Holgate and Galloway share duties as 5th choice CB/back ups to their respective full back positions, and also they'll both get time in the cups.

He's very much in the mould of Stones but seems to be a bit more there for natural defensive instinct and not overly taking risks despite being composed on the ball. Didn't look out of place today and handled almost any opposition player that came up against him.

Lost his way a bit towards the end of the first half but was very good again for the brief spell in the 2nd and even had to save Stones' blushes at one point with great awareness to cover the danger.

Would probably say with the uncertainty around Stones and the fact we are still yet to see Jags much he's probably pushed himself to 3rd choice CB on the right side and hopefully will get a few chances this season, liked the look of him and Coleman working together down the right aswell, few times Coleman did go a bit too far Holgate was always there to provide cover and Coleman helped him through the game aswell.
Totally agree. Huge game from him last night and think your description of him is spot on. He didn't look out of place and that position on the right of the 3 cb's could be ideal to add his development
He was the big plus last night in the game when a lot of our players didn't really play well

Can't wait for him to become first choice then make one mistake and be crucified for it...

Everton, that.

In all seriousness though I was impressed with him when he played vs Barnsley and he's just got better and better IMO.

Perfectly capable of playing right-back as well as centre-back, and evidently a hybrid of both those positions like he played last night suited him down to the ground as well - although Coleman helped him out a lot and played brilliantly.

Going forward he's basically in the Stones mould and that's excellent to see. No fear. Stones now gets vilified for it. Let's hope Holgate doesn't suffer from that as well.

....just wonder if at this stage he might be a little lightweight to play in a CB pairing, especially in this league. Kevin Ratcliffe was solidly built and used his pace to great affect and this boy has a chance of being similar.
