Mason Holgate

On the ball he is already one of the best in the world at the back, and his last ditch tackles are excellent too but he has a lot to do to fulfill the potential a lot have seen of him. I hope he does do well though and if he can concentrate on improving his weaknesses then City will have got themselves a very good player.
Ironically that's why Holgate can improve more than Stones can as he's under the watchful eye of Koeman, someone who can develope his defensive capabilities. Stones is under one of the best attacking managers in the world who wanted him for his on the ball, attacking capabilities so what's he going to learn , how to be even better at playing out from the back, whereas he probably needs someone like Allardyce to hone his defensive play.
Holgate is also likely get even more benefit from one of the best managers when it comes to improving defensive talents of young players - Unsy.

This is definitely not a trait a good defender should have; last ditch tackles are an admission somewhere earlier you've done something wrong.

Yeah, the team might've, but not necessarily the player alone. Cause and effect mate, doesn't work on a general level. Both Jags and Stones have shown the ability and composure to handle dangerous situations with efficiency and calmness.

I agree and disagree with you there. Claiming Holgate is a star already seems far too premature and very deluded in my opinion.

However, people went over the top about Stones as a prospect. He is arguably the best 'ball playing' defensive prospect since Rio Ferdinand but he's no where near competent enough in terms of overall defending. I'd say Tony Hibbert was a far better defender at his age than Stones is.

Stones has massive flaws in the defensive side of his game. He switches off too easily, he isn't alert to danger, he allows players to run at him in dangerous positions, he doesn't use his height well enough to win defensive headers. That's before you even mention the risks he takes in front of goal.

Think he said he believes Stones will be a star, Holgate is a good prospect.

Holgate will hopefully come on leaps and bounds under koeman and give him a bit of a headache like Stones did with Booby. Holgate looks like a good player and the boss seems to rate him already which will give him an advantage and some confidence.

In regards to Stones being as good as Ferdinand at his age, nah not for me, he could be as good as him but his defensive side is too weak and the lad is awful in the air

They have, and it can be the team, just saying if I was a defender I wouldn't want someone saying "your best ability is last ditch tackles".

So £47.5M wasn't too shabby for a defender whose defence skills are weak and he can't head a ball.........

Holgate however will benefit most from Stones' move

and yet the last thing we will do when we play City is put the ball in the air around Stones!
Holgate has looked good pre-season. Hope we have a new diamond.

Not very often you see Stones outmuscle someone or win a ball in the air, that could have been down to Martinez and his awful coaching abilities. Guardiola could be the making of Stones
