Mason Holgate

Last season when Coleman gets injured we are struggling for the right back spot , but now we can keep calm because we have this lad. but I don't agree with the centre back shouts. for me , Holgate is perfect for right back because he has pace and something to offer going forward . every time he gets the ball in the opposition half I had a feeling he knows what to do with the ball and he could create something. but he needs support from the winger in front of him .

But we've never seen Holgate at centre back have we?

Definitely a risk.
While we haven't seen him play CB at PL level , CB has been his position last season and this for the U23s. He made a few mistakes early on last season but improved throughout the season and his partnership with Galloway against Chelsea u21s in what may have been the last game of the season was very solid, though ironically I thought Galloway looked the better CB.

So in many ways , playing him at RB is a risk as it's not the position he's played most if his games in, and it revolves around the fact that RB is less exposed if he makes a mistake and the two CBs can cover him. The fact that he plays CB makes him ideal cover on the bench. The minutes gained at RB are invaluable to him and in gaining experience of the PL . That he can play at RB and do well is a great testament to his ability and he's developing into a very good player, but any suggestions that he should keep Coleman out should be considered nonsense. He's a year ahead of Jonjoe Kenny, and has better physicality and defensive qualities than Kenny, but Kenny is by far the better attacking RB and better at getting in penetrating crosses. It's a side that Holgate has never really had to develop like Kenny has ....... because he's played most of his games at CB.

This is where the Koeman regime needs to step up and be involved in Holgate's development . Unsworth is developing him into a pretty good CB at U23 level, if he's going to be seen as cover for RB then he needs further coaching and development at first team level , I.e by Koeman.

I just wonder about his size for CB currently though mate. I really like Holgate, he has an arrogance about him that I felt Galloway lacked, who played within himself. He also lacks the size of Pennington and Browning. I'd like to see him have a run at right back if Coleman was injured. It should be noted though, that I thought Coleman was fantastic yesterday, which isn't a view shared by most, so footballs a funny game really.

I like all that!

I'd just worry about lobbing him in at centre back with our coming games. Could see that great oaf Deeney bullying him a bit. Just because he's young, not because he's not good.

How tall is Mason? Just out of interest.

6ft 1/2 an inch (184cm) according to his Wikipedia page.

Indeed, at 20 he's less physically developed than Pennington or Browning, Browning has obviously used his layoff well to add more muscle to a big frame.

.

Yeah, comes back again to the fact he's only just turned 20 and is still developing, come January do you " lob him in" and try him or buy an established CB . There was a debate a few months ago around the fact that only two English CBs under the age of 23 started more than 5 PL games last season, Stones and the Newcastle player Lescales ( ? Spelling) that shows how difficult it is for young CBs to get development games when it's considered easier to payn£10 mill for an experienced CB .

Rondon is twice the player Deeney is and Holgate made him look silly earlier in the season. Played half of that game at right back, granted. But he's ready for the Premier League, no doubt.

I really like Pennington and it's a shame he is injured. There is an arrogance to Holgate that makes me think when he is ready physically he will do very well, but eased in at right back is fine for me.
