Not his achievements, just his style of play and impact. Titles etc. mean nothing - Phil Neville has a hatful for example. Neither do wages; Kaka and Ronaldinho sat on massive contracts whilst stinking the place up every week.

I just expected Rooney to be in the upper echelons, alongside Ronaldo and Messi - he's clearly not though. I expected him to be more explosive and dangerous than he is now. Let's face it, you don't go into a game against Man Utd thinking "we've got to keep Rooney marked brilliantly or we lose".

He could have been better tis all...

Fair point.

He's a striker and he's scored a lot of goals. That's job done.

I don't think you're being fair on him at all, to be honest.

Saying that he's not been as successful as he could have been because he isn't as good as Messi and C.Ronaldo doesn't make much sense to me, because it's clear that those two are two of the best footballers to ever kick a ball. Rooney was ace for us and looked fantastic, but to say that he could have been as good as those two isn't really true, as far as i'm concerned.

He never was going to be as good as them, basically.

He's not consistent enough I think. At times he is utterly world class and right up there.

But what separates CRonaldo and Messi is not so much that they've reached such a high level, it's that they've stayed there, and they maintain their ability or even improve on it each season.

At age 16-18 he was doing more in the toughest league in the world and on the international stage than Messi or Ronaldo.

Where we differ is on his potential - I honestly think he could have been substantially better than he is. He ran the show at Euro 2004 at the age of 17 and you could argue he's barely developed since then.

Trophies, wages... even goals mean very little when you're looking at ability. Andy Cole scored 41 in 46 for Newcastle in the Premier League and did well at United too - was he world class? No.

That's sort of my point really - but he was world class at 17. Has moving to United "made" his career in terms of development? In my opinion, no not at all.

to be fair,he has scored much more than i thought he would. he is a wonderful player and scores cracking goals but i though his highest season tally at the end of his career would have been around the 20 mark. never really struck me as a goalscorer so he has done better in that regard. tubey makes a good point, but i never thought he would become the best in the world, but he is known when top teams play united in the CL. they mention him as the threat and he has definitely become the greatest englishman of his generation. he hasn't delivered on the major stage for england, but look at his teammates?? no countries get carried by one man on the main stage anymore in football

True.

Messi hasn't exactly shone in international tournaments.

@Niang.

I'm starting to wonder wether he is that good too tbh. Yeah, he got played a lot by Caen, when they were desperate to try and stay up but he didn't really have much of an impact, only scoring a handful of goals.

Maybe he's great technically, but there's no Youtube vids that show it and his goal ratio is poor. All I can do is trust Moyes judgement, if we do get him, but on paper it's lookling like he's the French Anichebe.

He would have been good but probably a lot of hard work!
He is a diamond in the rough!
Also Very stupid !!
At his stage of career he doesn't need to be with a bankrupt club like AC Milan!
I don't know......I suspect he has had to be bought to pacify the Italian Fans (Stop them burning the stadium down!)
At least it looks like they are doing something...They need players that are ready to win them the Serie A

True.

I guess we'll find out in the next couple of days what he's doing.

The good thing about this transfer is that we won't be arsed in the short term that we've missed out.

The bad thing is that if he turns out to be the new Henry then we'll be kicking ourselves and telling our kids about how he almost signed for us for years to come.
