If he wasn't arsed about money, he'd go back to Newell's.
A Kopite I know was rambling on about him potentially being tied into investments and what not, so his hand has been forced by needing a final pay check.

What a load of rubbish and even if it isn't it's again about the money. He wants his final pay check and an even comfier life with Barca meaning sweet FA.

Like others have said, he's already richer than pretty much any other footballer - if not the richest - and could easily pay for free, but he won't.

He would still make a fair bit (a lot) of money from commercial deals and image rights without needing a playing wage, but £100k a week would be affordable.

I think he had agreed a deal with a 50% wage cut, but when Barca looked at it closer found out they still couldn't afford it.
Wasn't that "wage cut" actually spread over 5 years though when they only expected him to play for 2? So they'd be paying someone €35 million a year to twiddle their thumbs for a few years. You know Lionel, I can't imagine why your club is a financial basket case. No idea at all.

They can't even register any of their new signings until they get their wages to turnover ratio down to 70%, they're currently at 95% (110% before Messi left). Even if he agreed to play for free, which I'm not sure why anyone would expect the best player to ever play the game to do, they wouldn't be able to register him as a player anyway. They're properly banjoed.

Did he? And they still couldn't afford it?
He didn't....
From what I read, he was apparently going to take a 50% wage cut in terms of current wages in conjunction with a five-year deal, which would take him to 39!

If there was any transfer before then, they would have to still honour the contract too or something along those lines (yes, very bizarre).

So in reality it was the same wage he was on now for a two or three year deal and spread out over a longer period. But you're right, it's unlikely he'd take less.
