Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Think there were 6 pubs in Speke. The Fox, The Peg, The Dove, The Noahs, The Orient and The Saucer. But if you include all the Social and Church clubs, plus drinking dens like the Pondy and The Rugby Club, there were well over 20. Now there's just 1 pub, The Orient, 2 social clubs and 1 diner. 80 % of the establishments have closed down since I left Speke in 91. I know similar has happened everywhere but probably not to the same extent. 1 pub for such a huge community is insane.

Which part of Speke where you brought up in mate?
Is The Ambrose still open

Pretty certain the Ambrose and St Chrissies clubs both closed a few years ago. The only social clubs I know are still open are The Metal Box, and Dunnies, which is the Old Dunlops Sports and Social which now operates out of the old Fox building.

Edit. Just googled the Ambrose and now i'm not sure if it's still open are not mate. It may be. Don't have any links there now. On the rare occasion I do frequent Speke it's to see the old lads from the footie team I played for and that's at Dunnies club. But my brother still lived there up until about 3 years ago and I'm sure he said the only places to go for a bevvie were The O, Dunnies and The Metal box. He moved to Garston and always drank there or in Woolton.

Spent many a happy Sunday night upstairs at the Ambrose and at one stage for a time in late70- 71 nearly lived in the Noah's
Had my 18th birthday in the peg.
And got married in Crissies

It`s that bad for a drink in Speke, that I know lads that use the bar at the Goals five a side place off the Boulevard - seriously !

Belle Vale and Netherley haven`t had any pubs at all for a couple of years now. ( The Bridge was the last one to go )

I`m led to believe it`s the largest built up area in the UK, per head, without a pub

I've seen that Goals place. Used to be the Metal box football pitches. Didn't even know it had a bar tbh.

Yeah. People don't realise just how big Speke is. It's one of the biggest residential estates in the country with about 35000 inhabitants, and just 1 pub. Amazing really.

Harefield road, our house backed onto St Chrissys, I played Footie for the metal box and Speke argyle back in the day, the box was my local growing up, I worked there for a while, didn’t know you were a Speke lad Fred
Yeah lived there 30 years mate. I used to play for Speke Town and then we changed our name to Speke FC when we merged with Dunlops (Speke Hall Social). Used to drink quite a lot in the Metal Box. I played snooker there, or rather tried to. Did you remember a lad called Barry Wilkinson from when you worked at the Metal Box. I used to live next door to him on Western Avenue. I know he worked there for years.

That’s mad that, especially in a city with so many bars.

Had no idea Speke was that populated and I only associate it with the airport to be honest.

Yep I knew Barry well he drank in the Peg, good lad I played snooker with him for the Metal Box as did my dad Wally Beaney,

Roy Lally has the peg for a while and Alan McCrysal family had it,

Small world eh, but it’s big inside

Don't recall Lally's or McCrystals ever having the Peg Dunc. Sure you're not getting mixed up with The Saucer which I know one of the Lally's definitely had, I think it was Roy. The Walls used to run the Peg, certainly for the last 10/15 years of it's existence.

Did you know Alan McCrystal well? He was my elder sisters first beau so I've probably known him since I was about 12. His claim to fame was getting shot in the foot when he was standing at the bar in Jalons restaurant minding his own business. He's rolling around in pain and apparently all the mates he was with were too busy falling about laughing, ;)

Barry was a good mate. Me and my brother and him were always into quizzing and used to always win the Sunday night quiz in the Peg. Everyone used to go nuts. When I tell people my next door neighbour was a granddad at 32 nobody ever believes me, lol
