Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Hardknott pass in the lake district. I drove over it a month or two back. Check out various youtube vids from motorcyclists, cyclists and drivers.
I think it's officially the steepest Road in England and it has some quite tight hairpin bends and switchbacks.
From wikipedia - It has a maximum gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%). The pass takes its name from Hard Knott which is derived from the Old Norse harthr (hard) and knutr (craggy hill). A road sign warning drivers about the extreme gradient. A single track road runs between Eskdale in the west to the edge of the neighbouring Wrynose Pass in the east.
I walked over both of those when I was on a youth hostelling holiday with my mates back in the day. I was 16, young, fit and skinny! Isn't there a Roman Fort at the top of Hardknott Pass?
Well impressed with you driving over it.

That's interesting Kev. Been to the Lakes loads but this one's passed me by.
Shocked by the 33% gradient. When you watch the Tour de France the steepest gradient is about 25% and looks way steeper.

It was the first time for me. I also used to do a lot of walking when young and couldn't help wishing that I had known then of that particular hike.
The Roman Fort was the purpose of my visit (not particularly interested personally, but took my mate who is interested in all things Roman) Actually drove along the road in both directions. You certainly need to keep your wits about you, not least because of the amount of motorbikes.

I can remember driving over that pass and others about 40 years ago, I think I’d be terrified today , even single track roads are now something to be avoided! Nice photos too 😀

Good morning everyone, hope you are all well this morning. Off to have my eyes tested as I realised it was pre covid when I last had one 😮. Apparently you can also have a scan of your eye done for a small charge to make sure there’s nothing sinister going on, so I’ve booked in for that too which means Mr P will have to drive me home. I just know he’s going to love the 2 hours it will take me to try every pair of glasses on twice before I make a choice. May try varifocals this time as I’m sick of taking glasses on and off eg when I’m in the supermarket or shops, but the last time I tried them they made me feel a bit dizzy.
Have a lovely day all
I have varifocals, they did take a bit of getting used to but worth it. One of my friends gave up after a while, she said it was too much like life on the ocean wave for her liking. lol

I can't take credit for the photo unfortunately, I googled that. While my mate was interested in the Roman fort, I was more interested in the meadow pipits. lol
Took these yesterday up on hardknott pass in the lake district.
Anybody help with ID?
I'm guessing Meadow Pipit, but it really is just a guess.

Morning guys. Nice day to day so I'm taking the opportunity for a trip into town. Need to renew my cinema membership and I think I'll go to the matinee of the new indie film and d a bit of shopping. Will have a quick look at some of the posts but will catch up properly later. Have a great day all. ;)

Yes there is Anj. Cal and I were driving up to see it once many moons ago and a mist descended upon us half way there. You couldn't see a more than a few yards in front of you. We decided the best plan was to retrace our steps and descend below what we believed to be a cloud, Not an easy decision to make given the road and terrain. We managed to find somewhere to turn the car around and literally crawled at a snails pace for about an hour before we could see again. God knows what we'd have done had we encountered a car coming the other way.

Cal was never a nervous driver but I'd never seen her so frightened behind the wheel as she was that day. Perhaps maybe one day in Zante driving down a cliff pass to some restaurant. Both were my ideas as she frequently reminded me afterwards.lol

I'm a 2 glasses guy ( unless it's Friday night and I may have the whole bottle lol ) .
My refusal to take my reading glasses with me when shopping continually gets me into trouble. Just last week I bought a Yukka , it was very cheap for a big specimen. However I couldn't read the label and when I got home expert plants woman Mrs J took one look and said "that's not hardy , needs to go in the house " . When I got my glasses and read the label it said only hardy to -2. Oh well. It will look good in the Orangery over the winter.

So yes variofocals would be good for me but like you Val I tried them and just couldn't get used to them.
Lazy day watching golf and cricket today me thinks.
Have a lovely day everyone and keep those hill pictures coming but remember you can't make a mountain out of a molehill.
I'm assuming you are referring to pint glasses Jazz.

Hi guys, just posting a quick one. I am ok just really really having bad headaches which are debilitating me. So just letting you know that I'm ok and thankyou for your concern. I shall have a proper catch up when I feel better.

Have a good day guys.
Really good to hear from you T and so sorry to find you've started suffering the headaches again. I think I speak for everybody on here in that we all hoped those days were behind you. Really feel for you mate.

Good morning folks. Its a lovely day here but rain forecast later. I'm catching up on Everton news which isn't a tough task because there doesn't seem to be any.

Oh my goodness. I remember it being red hot the day we
walked up and having a oicnic kunch amongst the Roman Fort ruins!
Fair play to Cal's driving skills. I've only been really scared once - driving along the side of a loch in Scotland- we had a sheer mountainside on one side, about 6 inches of spare road and then about a 20ft drop into the loch. Mr F needed clean undies that day!

My worst driving experience was in Madeira with a sheer drop on my right in the mountains. Honestly it was absolutely no fun whilst Granny and Mrs J were chuntering on about where they would go for lunch.
