Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

I realise this won't go down well in some quarters but I just could not go on a cruise ,two days on one drove me mad .Some like the mother and some like the daughter .

We all used to enjoy it, I once took ten of my family, including daughter in law, father in law, brother in law and my mum on one. Cost a fortune especially as besides paying for it and a hotel the night before for everyone any money spent on ship went onto my account. But for me it was pure relaxation. My job was full on and mentally draining so I’d spend the first three days of any cruise, we did lots, fast asleep on a sun bed (in the shade) on the promenade deck. Lots of fresh air, no emails, no phone, just pure and total relaxation. I would then enjoy dinner and drinks and a show later on before arriving at our first major port of call. Bearing in mind this ranged from my eighteen year old daughter to my father in law and mum in their 70’s 80’s, everyone had a fabulous time. I do however remember sailing into Venice and a couple of men were talking about just getting off the boat and staying there. We are all different…….

Everybody’s different blue. We haven’t been cruising for about 5 years but the memories keep popping up on Mrs blueloon’s Facebook. We’ve seen some super places from Klimt’s Vienna to ABBA’s Stockholm , The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Cologne, Budapest, Prague on the way , even Helsinki and many super smaller places in the Med like Ajaccio, Santorini, Lucca, Genoa which we’d have never visited without cruising. We always did our own thing, avoided the cruise tours and just wandered off to explore. Good times for us.

Writing that just reminded me of my mum. Lived through the war in Liverpool, survived the bombing of Blackstock Gardens air raid shelter while my dad was in the Navy, I wasn’t born at the time. She was a proper down to earth scouser. Anyway on one of our cruises (I always took her) she bought me a present of a jumper from one of the on board shops. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that as all spends went on my credit card I was paying for it. It’s the thought that counts after all…..

We weren’t sure about cruising, but our first cruise was sailing out of Venice as the evening sun went down, stunning sights which overcame any trepidation we had.

Good morning all on this sunny day here in Finland .I hope all had a good night and have a great day. On this cruise thing I do respect anyones decision to go on them and my brother loved them but I was once on a Greek island drinking at a harbour bar and paying a fair price for aa long G&T when the bar man came and took all the menus replacing them with different ones that were about double the old prices ,upon questioning him with my concerns having not yet paid the bill ,he assured me that those prices were not for me just the cruise ship passengers that were disembarking as we spoke .
That and the mini cruise that I took which simply drove me mad going around in circles .
I also am lucky enough to have a large yacht owner in the family who proudly sailed us out of the dock and handed me the wheel teaching me how to get the feel of the wind in the sails -a wonderful feeling of power -after ten minutes I wondered how can anyone sail around the world doing this all day . So yes it is me obviously given the amount that love cruises . Have a great day all COYB.

Very similar situation.

We first started cruising 11 years ago when I asked mum what she wanted for her 85th birthday ...."to go on a Caribbean cruise" she said , so we did.

Like you it all went on my credit card , she had a whale of a time and went for the next 3 years before declaring at 88 that she'd had enough travelling.

But by then we got the bug. Waking up on a different island every day , some entertainment of an evening and invariably some very good food , not to mention winning the Caribbean cup every year ( table tennis on board lol).

So yes we love cruising. Unlike some it's not the only type of holiday that we take but we always look forward to it

I'd particularly recommend ( as Fred is doing now ) cruising to Scandinavia. Normally it is frighteningly expensive but a cruise allows you to visit without it costing you the earth.
