Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Sci fi, Stephen King type of stuff. I like crime thrillers, biographies. To be honest I'll read most things. Jackie Collins kept me company on many a sunbed in the 1980s. 🤣

i've never read anything by Terry Pratcett and I don't know why. I was thinking of buying a couple of his.
I’m currently reading aDavid Baldacci book “ Long Shadows” , “ featuring “ FBI Agent Amos Decker” . Easy read , crime thriller , holiday fiction and it keeps me off GOT a bit particularly in the evening. About two weeks ago I randomly caught a bit of “ Tess of the D’Urbevilles” on Radio 4. It left me intrigued as it was in the middle of the book , hinting at what had previously happened but leaving me hanging as to what was to come. I bought it and it arrived today , never read Thomas Hardy , if I manage it it will be a first !

Best book I’ve read in past 12 months is “ Lessons in Chemistry” , Bonnie Garmus . Superb and I’d highly recommend it.

I tend to read light stuff on holiday, anything by KL Slater or Nick Alexander. Meredith Alone by Claire Alexander, Payday by Celia Walden, The Tattoist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine by Gail Honeyman, are some of the ones I have enjoyed. Not literary classics but absorbing.

I’ve just bought Lessons in Chemistry off Amazon for my kindle app - thanks for the recommendation it looks really good.

Hello everybody. I had a lovely lunch with my friend. I went for the fish and chip option. Well worth it but reigned it in with the pudding, had a mini dessert and a coffee instead of a normal sized dessert and coffee. You can probably see my halo glowing if you look out of your window. The grey sky lifted later this morning and it's been another really warm day. still hot now. And, bonus - my tomatoes have turned red. I think this last blast of sunny weather is just what they needed.

I need some books to read on my hols - any suggestions anybody? I hardly ever read now because I read so much in work so actually having some time to read for pleasure is making me happy. I may check out the book club thread, there's usually some good recommendations in there but if anybody has any favourites let me know.
If you haven't already read it (which you probably have) it has to be The Ragged Trousered Philanthropsts by Robert Tressell. For many years now I have been obsessed, not just by the book, but by the circumstances in which it was written and the fascinating story behind the life and times of it's author.

My wife has been reading Jan Pilipp Sendker books the last one she hugged as she told me it was finished ,the one before she cried for the last 50 pages ,she said they are not really romantic but their is romance ,they are set in Burma and New York and in her words they are "enchanting" this is in part as they touch on Buddhism .She also said she has never read anything similar .
I have mentioned before the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley .

Good morning all on this fine day here in Finland .I hope all are well and had a great night .
I wish I could settle down to read but I never manage. When I was young I was in hospital for two and a half years and they had a library cart that came around every week ,I read then so fast that I had finished the book before they left the ward but now I just wish ,I have taken books to read when we go away but the lure of the sea takes me and most times I haven't even opened the first page .
The car saga ended when we bought another Nissan ,now when the Juke is repaired ,I got the part yesterday ,then it is up for sale .

Glad you sorted the car situation out. I also have a similar love of the sea (being brought up in Liverpool does that) yet now I live further from the sea than pretty well anywhere else in the U.K…….

Lovely article in the telegraph today about Ken Dodd. It ended with five of his jokes…

1. If at first you don’t succeed, sky-diving is not for you.

2. What a beautiful day… for taking a bucket of whitewash to the town hall, throwing it over the pigeons and saying “How do you like that?”

3. There are three words that men can’t stand: “Is that it?”

4. Give me a home where the buffalos roam and I’ll show you a house with a nasty smell.

5. Friday morning, there was a tap on the door – he’s got a funny sense of humour that plumber.

Our neighbour went to see Ken Dodd at the local theatre, he was supposed to finish at 10.30 and he was still going at midnight!

I also bought it for my daughter , she has a PhD , works in science in a university and experienced some of the things in a book. I’m going to chase her up to see if she’s read it yet, it will provide moments of relief from a a full time job and two kids!

I loved Ken Dodd. Saw him years ago at The Royal Court. He was brilliant. I was also very jealous of a girl in my class who did dancing and had been a Diddyman in one of his pantomimes.

Good morning all. Thank you for your book suggestions. I shall check them out. I have read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist @kev . It had a profound impact on me. I think that, Animal Farm and the part of St Matthews Gospel where Jesus talks about the sheep and the goats ( when I was hungry you gave me food etc) probably shaped how I try to live my life. Sorry if I sound like Mother Theresa but I hate injustice and just think be nice, help where you can.
