That's so sad. Without going into too much detail my job involves me being able to prevent people from working or volunteering in what is known as regulated activity. Teachers, doctors, nurses, care workers, football coaches, scout leaders and so on. Some of the stuff I read about on a daily basis is horrific, just wicked awful people. Some however are misguided, they make a bad decision that has unintended consequences and somebody is harmed. I feel sorry for a lot of care workers who come across my desk. Usually overworked underpaid undervalued and working in homes that are chronically understaffed to maximise profit but mostly trying to do their best. You are right though, our elderly are not treated with dignity and respect within the care system. They appear to be a commodity. It makes me so sad. I have actually cried while sitting at my desk when I read some of my referrals.Hope your Dad is ok today Larbert, that is a horrific thing to have happen anyone.
Maybe 6 years ago i spent two days on a trolley in A&E awaiting surgery to take my appendix out, at the time there was chronic over crowding in the Irish hospital system and there were trollies in every corridor with people everywhere, i was one of them. I saw the most heart breaking situation i ever saw though, an old man came in from an old peoples home and took a shine to a girl in i guess her twenties who was on a trolley in the corridor as well. I have no idea what was wrong with her but she rarely moved and just lay curled up in a ball. Anyway this old man went over and started gently stroking her hair and saying "you know we always loved you so why did you have to have to leave to us" He did it with such love and affection it was incredible to watch but at the same time harrowing. Here you have an old man who isnt fully engaged believing he has found his i presume dead daughter and a girl who is too sick to deal with it. Hospital answer was to get a security guard to sit with him and everytime he got up to force him to sit down again, beyond cruel in my opinion as he was getting upset, the girl was upset but too sick to do anything herself and everyone watching it going on for hours were pleading with staff to sort it out. Eventually the man was moved away somewhere but what became of his world and his belief that his daughter was somewhere in the hospital?
The security guard "answer" horrifies me and makes me presume that our elderly arent treated with the respect they deserve in the care system, your Dads unfortunate incident only reinforces that belief
