Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

At the weekend, for the first time ever, I heard a Scouser unhappy in his own city. He told me that he has encouraged his daughters to leave and head towards Cheshire. I was trying to understand why and it seemed to be the stags/hens invading the city that was his issue. A couple of times he said it wasn’t the place he grew up in, you know that type of sentiment.

Now even I have seen much change in my 20+ years of travelling over but 2 things struck me. Doesn’t everywhere change over 20 odd years was the first one although to be fair, I never saw the 1970/80s Liverpool he grew up in. Secondly, I wonder did he not see the irony in having this conversation with me, someone who just nips in and out of the City myself.

Random I know but just sharing my thoughts before this PSG match starts :)

It's certainly true that Liverpool has become a magnet for tourists but they bring a lot of money to the city and boost the economy.

In addition if you don't like it just avoid Concert Square and Mathew St.at night

Good morning all on this sunny day here in Hyvinkää .i hope all had a good sleep and are ready for the new day . When the photos were posted last Saturday I didn't recognise some of the buildings and had no idea there was an"eye" in Liverpool !
Here in Finland we moved three years ago and going back to the last place this week there were so many new buildings ,it puzzles me with the population here being so small why do we need a Lidl every 1/4 mile along with all the other supermarkets ? I also heard there was 1,000,000 sq.m. of empty office space and yet they continue to build new ones .
A slightly different angle on the FFP as it was ,if Man City are punished what can they do ? Take away their trophies ? The first thing is the reds will want more trophies but deeper than that all teams would be eligible for a return of points which would reformulate the whole prem for how many years .They certainly have opened a bag of worms . Or will it all be brushed under some carpet for the sake of the Sky Six. For me the whole thing is a total mess .Have a great day all COYB

All brushed under the carpet. The new Football Regulator will always be swayed by the wider interests of the Govt and therefore no sanctions will be applied to Middle Eastern or American backed clubs.

Strangely, I had a similar conversation the other day about the pros and cons of tourism. I was over in Wales, and there were grumblings about holiday homes.

It's different with Liverpool, of course, but the local I mentioned said they're priced out of living there. I agreed, and it must be difficult for the local people.

But, I said that they're making a lot of money from tourism that otherwise wouldn't be there: restaurants, bars, attractions and accommodation.

Without it, what would they all do? A growing percentage of the city's economy is based on tourism, and without there'd be less money going into pockets.

Of course we need to find a balance, but my mentality is embrace it as much as possible. Concert Square et al. is not for me, but it is paying people's wages.

It's the same with the national weekend - people may moan, however the bars, restaurants, taxis, Merseyrail, hotels and beauty places do very well out of it.

I was meant to be going today, however my son has a match in Manchester this afternoon so I'm on taxi duty whilst the wife goes with her friends.

I agree Phil.

Yeah I think the N Wales situation is different.

As far as I'm aware the Liverpool boom in tourism hasn't caused an increase in 2nd home ownership or a disproportionate increase in house prices .

Good luck to your lad today.

As always it is a swings and roundabouts thing ,the main question is how much of the money actually does go to the workers ,are they on a good wage ? I don't expect they are ,perhaps a bit over the minimum but the vast majority of the profit goes to the owners . I agree with @jazzy there won't be to many having a pied á terre in the area .

Peterborough is so different from the city in which I grew up. It was designated as a “new town” in the sixties and the resulting development has been responsible for drastic change in some areas. The fields and woods of my childhood are long gone under the new township of Bretton, which was non existent before 1970. The Peterborough Images FB page when posting pictures of old Peterborough regularly has to turn off comments because the discussion deteriorates into remarks “So much better then” “That was proper Peterborough before….(insert your own insult)” etc. On a personal note the new development and subsequent boom in housing gave us the chance of buying a new home. Do I prefer the old Peterboro probably but I’m getting old and things always look better with hindsight.

Human nature to look back more fondly on the past while it may be somewhat through rose tinted glasses. However as you highlighted, progression does bring some benefits as in your case with a new home.

As @PhilM said as well, if a place is doing well then it creates opportunities for locals that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

Hard to find the happy medium between familiarity and progress is what it boils down to I suppose. Not that all progress is good mind you!
