Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Taking a chance on dodging the showers which were forecast we went over to Sawtry to visit the churchyard where Mr G’s parents ashes are buried, in fact he’s probably related to most of the inhabitants. The front of the church is well kept, the back less so and it must be the most neglected churchyard in the country. The rain stayed away and it was very pleasant in the sitting in the sun listening to the birds, shame about the constant hum of the traffic on the nearby A1M.

Tbf, I walk the dog in Anfield cemetery and the lads are always working, but it seems like as they cut the grass it puts on a few inches in 24 hours. I do like the stand on mowers they have

Is Cemetery Sunday a thing in England?

Here it’s a Mass in the graveyard and in the run up to it, everyone washes the headstones and tends to the flowers etc. A big No No to miss that event. Like a lot of Catholic traditions, it’s the community element of it all, not just the Mass itself but the chats in the graveyard in the run up to it.

There is quite a lot of grave tending in Anfield on Sunday. The lad is always there with the flowers to sell. No Mass as far as I know. In fact no church on there. Lovely to walk around though.

We don’t have anything like that here which is a shame. The last time we visited about a year ago some volunteers had made a start on clearing it but they’d already burnt out a strimmer and needed a heavy duty one but the church weren’t willing to contribute towards one. I guess they had to give up, it’s such a pity to see it in such a state and to me a bit disrespectful.

Got to give the council their due in this respect. Really well looked after.

I do like a good graveyard, but we’re not a family of visitors though

Have never been to Anfield cemetery but just Google mapped it and it’s big compared to our own. Definitely a market for selling flowers at a graveyard 😀

Don’t understand that. Your graveyard is a reflection of your community.

Every grave in our parish will get attention before Cemetery Sunday. Volunteers identify graves not tended and tidy them up before the Mass. People move away or families die out but their plots still need some TLC. In the same vein, our Priests will encourage us to water neighbouring graves when doing our own as not everyone is able bodied or present to it. A small gesture, 5 minutes of your time, but someone somewhere appreciates it 😀

Good morning all on this super sunny day ,we had a thunderstorm last night , it was all I could do to stop the wife stripping off and doing a dance -she reckons that she lived a life as a North American Indian and her chanting is something to behold . Many know my lack of belief but a well kept graveyard is a lovely thing. If I remember correctly they were also an aboretum and the species were labelled in Anfield Cemetery at least . I hope all slept well and have a great day .Oh and good night @peteblue ,I hope all is as well .COYB
