Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Merry Christmas Eve everyone. You are a bunch of productive posters, I have spent the past couple of hours trying to catch up to this trend to the detriment of my family who still is waiting for me to make breakfast lol

We are back to the US safely and Covid free too, well at least for now. Yesterday we got to celebrate my daughter’s birthday with all the family that came over to see her and most of us are still here at my mum’s as we are to have a Christmas celebration tonight, Colombians celebrate on the 24th then we will be back home tomorrow so our daughter can open the gifts Santa left for her there. I really need to get my gears lighten up so I can help my aunt with the cooking but I shall return in a bit to read how is everyone’s day is going. Until them sending a big hug to everyone here. Xx
Happy belated birthday to Sassita.

It’s always hard to wrap my head around those cultures that celebrate on the 24th. The slightest difference, really, but a complete departure from what I know at the same time. Have an amazing Colombian Chrimbo today, and the same again tomorrow for the US version.

Happy Christmas Eve everyone. The husband and I are gearing ourselves up for the present swap this evening. This involves waiting until two sets of grandkids are in bed/bath, dropping presents off and putting in parents car boot, then repeat procedure at other house. Wasn’t too bad in previous years as one set lived over the road from us but they have now moved 10 miles away. Eldest is 13 so we don’t have to keep the secret for him but the youngest is only 5 so we’ll be doing this for a few more years but who wants to sit and relax on Christmas Eve anyway lol. Hope the weather clears for you @Barnfred 55, be thinking of you over the holiday. Enjoy the day everyone whatever you are doing.
Thanks Gwladys. Hope you have a good one too.

I think I'll be fine tomorrow. I'm out for dinner and I have the latest James Bond DVD to watch in the evening. I have some excellent local duck pate and salmon pate to snack on in the evening as I'll probably be stuffed after my Christmas dinner.

I need to get through today though. Christmas Eve was always a busy day for us as we'd prep everything for the following day. We'd have quite a bit to drink and all our favourite Christmas songs would be playing on a playlist loop. We'd normally finish off the day by watching the midnight Christmas carol service on TV and then crawl into bed knackered.

By contrast, today is a very lazy day for me. I'm contemplating putting on the christmas song playlist, but I'm not sure if it's going to make me happy or sad. So still haven't decided. I think I will though. In fact, I've just made a positive decision. See, that's what posting in this thread does for me. It's an absolute life saver. ;)

Edit Playlist is on shuffle. Slade Merry Christmas is the first one up. Brought a smile to my face. :)

Chrimbo prep update:

Gravy base (chicken wings, veg, herbs) has been roasted and is currently mashed up and frying to get a bit darker. The gravifying process will begin shortly.

Spuds are par boiled, taking a goose fat bath and wrapped in foil. Tomorrow I’ll take out of the fridge, foil off, season and in they’ll go.

Getting smugger by the minute, though I’m also on my second beer of the day so still time for everything to go horribly wrong.

Have a lovely day Sassy and family x

He's got good taste has Jack.

Does he walk on the brightside of the road?

I hear that Christmas Eve is a marvellous night for a moondance.

He sounds like a cracker
I think your's has excellent taste mate. What with not liking Jazz and all. lol lol

Enjoy tomorrow mate. What do veggies have for Xmas lunch. Do you do a roast dinner without the meat? Like roasties, parsnips, stuffing, carrot and turnip, sprouts, cauliflower cheese ?

I absolutely love dogs but sometimes cats can be very funny too. Next doors, when it isn't using my garden as his toilet, is hilarious.

Cats aren't funny mate...

Aaw Fred. I have admired your strength over the last few months. It must be so difficult for you. Cal will be with you today.

On a lighter note - agree always Dijon mustard.

Excellent. Please do. I'm enjoying knowing what other folks are doing today. My gravy is instant I'm afraid. Might have to have a look at Jamie Oliver gravy.
I've never made gravy. Cal used to use all the bits from the turkey roasting dish, add flour and the stock from the carrot and turnip. Always turned out delicious.

Pretty much Fred.

Starters Stilton and broccoli soup , with Chablis.

We will then have roasties , sprouts , honey glazed parsnips, carrot and turnip mash , peas , stuffing and a bit of Quorn roast - meant to taste like chicken but it doesn't - just for the texture , with a St Emillion.

Then sticky toffee pudding with cream.

After a kip some cheese and Port

I can’t imagine how different today must feel and how much you must miss her, but even despite the lump in my throat from reading your post it’s also made me smile.

We don’t have a say in when this dreaded, inevitable thing happens so all we can do before it does is make the kind of memories and traditions that will sustain us after it does.

I’m truly in awe - much as I was of the big man @messymascot - of how well you’re coping and the amazing attitude you have about everything. I didn’t have the privilege of knowing her but I’m certain your wife is exceptionally proud of you.

I hope you have the loveliest time you can over the next few days and that you’re able to cherish the gifts you guys managed to squirrel away in your memory banks in the time you had.

In the meantime, follow my pointless cooking updates and increasingly drunken ramblings if that helps get you through!!

Merry Christmas, sir.

Dear @larbert toffee I hope your parents had a lovely 65 wedding anniversary, that’s quite an accomplishment. Have a great time visiting and taking care of them when you go to Merseyside next week.

@Terrarian pain is not something that I would get used to either. I’m sorry you have to endure so much at such a young age. Did your spine get injured? My husband had a really bad a car accident when he was 16 that messed his spine so he himself lives with a lot of pain, I’m fearful what’s going to happen to him as he gets older.

While there is a lot of horrible human beings, there are also so many that have goodwill and show kindness towards others, such as your neighbor. It is people like her that can make a great difference on a person’s life without realizing it.

She is a cutie!

Congrats! Time to live a little more :)

Why are you making such promises. There is nothing wrong with showing us your learned task here at GOT, not matter how much people are tease about it, pics add a new layer of vision to the forum.

Btw, your fella is a nice one. I hope all goes well with the outcome of his x-rays

They indeed sound like a pair of legends, how sweet.

I’m just curious if they also love cannabis as much as we do? lol

That’s such a lovely movie, I haven’t watch it in so that seems like a good movie to watch with the family while gathering the next few days.

Sounds like a great plan, enjoy your food and the painting. Xx

I feel like a bad mum because I never was willing to give in to the Elf on the shelf tradition but I’m glad I didn’t after seeing my best friend going through it. You are a good dad for it.

Have a great time exchanging presents this evening, you are great parents for going through all this effort this for your grandkids ?

Malta Christmas logs, sounds like a recipe would like to have :D

Well said, Tommye!

Making your own eggnog, now that’s impressive. How hard is it?
I think you've covered all bases there Sassy in your catch up reply.

I hope that Sassita had a fab birthday and that your family has a wonderful Christmas.
