Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Things don’t get any better. The son of a chap I knew years ago got in touch to arrange a wake at the pub. Then I visited my mate who has PSP and who had broken his hip, he can barely speak and cannot walk, he’s only 67. Then the friend who is in hospital in pain and on morphine, he’s 69, was told his Liver Cancer is at stage 4 and that it has spread to his lungs. He’ll be lucky to see the year out, but all we can do is pray and hope…sorry for delivering more bad news……

Further to this, I’ve just received a text from my mate with cancer, he has cholangiocarcinoma ( a very rare form of bile duct cancer) and the doctors say it’s too aggressive to treat. He has this evening been brought back home in order to spend his last days with his family and friends under palliative and end of life care…I knew it was coming but the speed of him feeling not quite right to today is a matter of just 8 weeks…it’s a crying shame…….

I am aghast at the news you keep bringing @peteblue it is a sign of how many friends you have . I can only wish him a peaceful next days or weeks and that his family and you stay strong throughout this terribly sad time just before Xmas . All the rest of you reprobates stay safe and well .COYB

Thanks guys but his wife and family we have to help. She was with us in the pub Friday discussing the most likely outcome, she is a very stoic sort but she knows that we will rally around to help her and the family get through all this and the months afterwards. Fortunately or really unfortunately our group of friends now have quite a lot of experience in these matters after this dreadful year. I’ll be visiting my friend when she says he may be up to having friends call by……

Morning everyone,

Anyone on flood alert?

Fortunately we seem to have got away with it here.

Had plans to get up early and go to the gym and do mum's shopping on the way back but Rosie put paid to that by getting us up with an upset tummy at 3 , 4 and 6 am!

Terribly sad to read your latest bad news post Pete - what can anyone say?

Speak later everyone.

What a difference a day makes been a dry, bright, sunny day today. Popped into W. H. Smith in town this morning and was shocked to see only two members of staff and about ten customers in there. When our kids were little I used to do Christmas temping there and the place was buzzing. In those days there were loads of staff and we could hardly keep pace with the queues, now it’s dying on its feet, so sad to see.

I was in a W H Smith about 6 months ago , a queue of 2 , when I got to the front the only assistant decided to take a personal call on her phone , she spent next the 5 minutes giving someone instructions while trying and failing to scan my gift card with one hand. I haven’t been back since , it’s a 25 mins drive away , and it’s harsh I know but it’s far easier to buy a book or whatever on Amazon.

I love personal service in shops - I will even go to the manned checkouts in Tesco even if I've only got a few items .

However I cannot abide rudeness with anyone especially someone who is supposed to be serving me.

Don't blame you for not going back bl

I agree with you about personal service and do the same at Tesco and often enjoy a brief conversation with someone on the till. It is small and very local so everyone is very friendly or else they stick out like a sore thumb .

Disgusting service not surprised you haven’t been back and you are right it is easier to buy on Amazon and much cheaper too. You can’t beat the smell of a bookshop though, I just love the smell of a new book. And yes I do know I’m weird.🤣

Oh no, not weird. There is something very special about the smell of a new book. I couldn't have a Kindle - I love having something to hold and pages to turn!

Hello everybody. Very windy and cold here. @peteblue Im so sorry to hear about your friend. This year has been rubbish for you.
We had a lovely time in Nottingham- we left home in thick snow which disappeared and turned into rain so driving wasn't that bad. The hardest bit was getting from ours in Durham to Charlotte's boyfriend's in Darlington. Once we got through that bit everything was fine. Chris is definitely in a better frame of mind. I'm convinced coming off steroids has improved his mental health no end.
I definitely think Dyche has lost interest. Did you see the pictures of Pickford shouting at the bench to make some changes. Jordan for manager!!🤣 It would be interesting if nothing else. I'm currently watching Newcastle on the TV with Mr F. West Ham are winning at the moment. I'm trying to be empathetic but I really don't care and I'm laughing on the inside! Having said that I can't see the score staying as it is.

Except that a Wham win is bad for us.

Thank you Anj, especially with the family issues you have been dealing with… ❤️

So Sorry to hear about your friend and sorry you’ve had such a year . Despite such a difficult time I suspect she’ll think herself fortunate to have you and your friendship group around her .

My thoughts are genuinely with you all .
