Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Well that’s 3 days of so called care support. Christmas Eve a young woman arrived with paperwork, the carers that were supposed to arrive didn’t turn up, she made excuses for them, traffic etc. Christmas Day I got a phone call saying the carer was at the front door but no one was in, I just happened to be standing right outside of the front door !. Another phone call describing the house and the name of the road immediately suggested they’d gone to the wrong village, they eventually turned up but by now I’d already seen to my wife, but I said at least you now know where we live. Today, they should have been here by 1.15 at the latest, no sign of them so I changed, washed and dressed my wife again and gave her something to eat. The carer turned up an hour later but there was now nothing for her to do. This home care is draining me of energy. An inauspicious start to say the least….

On the face of it that's not good Pete. But if you're going to use carers you need to cut them some slack mate, There will always be teething problems with these things and it's also happening at the worst possible time of the year for arranging cover for staff absence etc. Also, You never know what problems the carers need to deal with on earlier appointments and these guys already work to a tight schedule. And if they turned up an hour late and you already had Kay washed, dressed and fed, I'm guessing that you hadn't given them much leeway before taking over yourself.

In my experience carers have been incredibly dedicated and hardworking people, not to mention grossly underpaid and undervalued for what they do. They also tend to have a wealth of experience in dealing with people suffering with dementia. I think most on here have been urging you to give it a go Pete, mainly out of concern for your own well being as much as anything. At the end of the day it may not work for you and that's absolutely OK. But I would urge you to at least give it some time mate, and try and resist the temptation to do things yourself if they're running a bit late. I hope things work out for you.

Wise words Fred and very true. When my Mum had a care package, I'll be honest some of them were useless - my Dad had to show them all sorts of stuff that they should have known about. Most of them were fine though. As time went on we got to know the ones Mum liked the most and we asked if they could be her carers all the time.. The company were fine with that so win win for all concerned. I'm still friends with one of them on Facebook - a lovely lady from Speke.
