At 27 he is maturing in to a very good centre-half, if he continues to play and improve like he has, he could be a vital player in the coming seasons. It's crazy to think that he is our oldest and most experienced centre-half at 27!

But, isn't that the very point I am making.
Players are written off on here as useless without taking any of the many other factors into account that influences a players performance.

Yes, sorry - I should have began that post with "I agree", because I think you're more or less spot on there

It's the crowd lets be honest, He's benefiting from having no crowd.
I only started watching Everton this season and I'm very impressed with Keane. He not only has scored goals but has been very solid in defense. When you have a center-back who is consistent it is a gift. Unfortunately, Mina has been erratic this season. Two consistent center-backs will be ideal.

I think Keane is the most improved member of the squad but for some reason I am still uneasy with him in the team. He can't be faulted for how he has played post lockdown but I just always fear he is going to make a mistake. I think I will be more comfortable once Holgate is back as he has pace so a mistake might not be as costly. Also it seems when your in form in goes your way. Up until lock down every time Keane was attacking from a corner his head was like a 50p and the ball went everywhere but the goal, now the tide has turned and he is now a genuine attacking threat.

...good point. That could be a big advantage, although his form started to pick up last season.
He's always been a standard player he'll have good games and might make a couple mistakes here and there nothing too major but I never felt he had the fire in his belly, He's a big strong lad and he rarely uses it but since lockdown he's been a standout player, Looks comfortable on the ball floating passes like Beckham strong in the air, proper unit. I pray to god whenever fans come in he can keep this version of Keane but I won't be too surprised.

I don't think it's a surprise that he scored in 2 of the first 3 games and then kicked on with his performances. Goals bring confidence, even for a defender. It's a bit like when a tail ender smashes a few at the end of the innings. They often come straight back out and bowl a brilliant spell with the new ball.

Best English defender in the league so far this season and long may it continue.

...I like your ‘fire in his belly’ phrase, I tend to use ‘lack of aggression’ to describe Keane. To a lesser extent Mina isn’t mobile enough to play with aggression and dominate, although he does have fire in his belly.

its why I think Godfrey could make a big difference when he eventually plays CB. He’s raw and will make mistakes but he has the physicality and aggression to be more dominating than Keane or Mina. Hopefully he’s the dominating CB we’ve sorely missed.

I feel that I am lucky to be new to the club. I don't have an past history of watching our players, so I don't carry the negative views others do and I judge players solely on what I am seeing. No bias, no preference other than towards James obviously.

So when I see Keane, I am impressed. He is very solid, not mistake prone, able to play the long ball, score goals. Solid solid CB.

Things to keep in mind is that there are very few stand out CBs nowadays. It's become a position of a lot of "solid" guys but few real elite guys. So I think we have a good group of 4. Not worse than the other clubs we compete have.

I'm happy with Keane and our defense.
