I am not particularly trying to defend Keane but centre backs usually play as a pair, covering for each other when necessary. I think it must have been very difficult for anybody to play alongside Ashley Williams who does not look like a premiership footballer at the moment and I am not sure that he even looks as if he cares.

I would like to see Keane play with a decent partner at centre half and a proper left back before discounting him completely.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Keane was caught out of position a lot on Saturday but usually down to Cuco being Cuco.

The majority of the balls were played in between Martina and Keane into the channels, that’s up to Keane to deal with. Either be strong and bully Barnes or drop and anticipate the ball so you have the match on him. He did neither, he time he was floored and watched the ball sail over his head, we didn’t have a high line so if Williams would have left his position it would have been a free for all in the box

I’d like to see him sold, immediately. He his a shocking defender

I never liked Holgate as I thought he made too many silly mistakes, Mori used to do similar, BUT at the moment our defence is absolute turd and I’d like to see whether these two have matured any and put them together, if nothing else we’d have just a little bit of pace at the back......

I'm really sorry, but Keane was one of the best centrebacks in the league last season. He played 35 games in a Burnley side that surpassed all expectations.

The simple fact of the matter is that all defensive coaching has gone out of the window.

..I thought about this on Saturday and agree that the defensive unit appear to lack coaching. They should defend as one and clearly don’t. Saying that, CBs are talkers who constantly chat and sort problems out for themselves on the pitch. They never stop yapping to each other. They are also in competition against their opposition number. Keane looked lost. He and Williams are internationals, I expect better.

Burnley are doing better this season which might say something. Last season they sat very deep as a team, especially central midfielders in front of the back four. They were less exposed by long balls down the channels. Remember Keane getting skinned by Lukaku for his goal at Goodison. That was too easy and should’ve set alarm bells ringing.

I’m beginning to wonder if he’s just poor. CB is the easiest of all positions to play on the pitch, certainly for reading the game it is, everything happens in front of you.
That ball he got skinned for on Saturday was obvious and should have been his, I cant believe a pro centre back could not see it coming.

The one thing that I learned on Saturday above all is that I don't want Dyche anywhere near Everton as manager.

I know yeah, two wins against 300m Everton from lowly Burnley in the same season. Give me points over style any day. Unfortunately we get neither points nor style. Dyche over Allardyce any day. Dyche over another manager? Difficult to say unless we have some solid links.

Burnley have been very poor since Christmas and even on Saturday in the first half we probably should/could have scored three or four goals.

I have always said that I will happily take a 1-0 win at anytime but I thought Burnley were poor against us just that we were worse at the back. They had one tactic and on Saturday it worked against our defence but I think longer term it has no future for a team with any ambition.

Im starting to think he might just be a good championship player, but nothing more.
Put him in a team that plays a low block that defends it's 18 yard line and you will see the best of Keane, look at Tarkowski at Burnley he looks like Keane did last year, while last season he was a squad player at Burnley while Mee and Keane were the #1 partnership, now Keane is gone and Tarkowski plays every week he is looking like a quality CB as Keane did last year.

And now if you put Tarkowski in a team that plays a high line he would look as bad as Keane with his glaring limitations for all to see.

I was always wary of the signing of keane when i saw none of the top 6 in for him,all those teams play a high line and their scouting obviously saw he had limitations of pace and other attributes.

Really good post that mate. I think you are spot on. Sometimes a good system can make players seem better than they are and inflate their price tags. Our defense is ripped open in seconds when playing a high line, and when not the panic just sets in...I mean Ashley Williams sets in..
