2017/18 Michael Keane

I don't think he's awful.

I think a major issue with him right now is that he's being asked to play as the stopper, whereas (despite his physicality) he's more of a covering defender (how many blocks has he got in this season?). Watching him and Jagielka yesterday, they seemed to struggle in deciding who would press and cover (look at the second goal, and how long it took for Keane to close down MA).

I'm not willing to write him off, I hope we sign a dedicated stopper this summer so we can see the real Michael Keane.

He has had a dreadful season, as have the vast majority.

I am not going to fully write him off though. Get a proper manager and coaching staff in asap and assess him.
I think he suffered mentally as much as anything physically.
He wanted a World Cup slot and the team just got worse and worse, and he just folded.
How he comes back from that will decide whether he has what it takes to make it.

Another massive question mark against our scouting and recruitment.

He might turn out to be decent in a more structured set up, with a more positive coach who can teach him how to not get so exposed, but at the moment I'm not seeing a £30m player at all.

He's not mobile enough to play that role though.

His signing kind of shows how poor the recruitment was with Walsh. He was signed cos of his age and he was on the fringe of the England squad, which sounds ideal. But realistically he was just doing really well in a very organised, defensive system. Which is why Tarkowski has basically done as well if not better since he replaced Keane in the same system. We don't play the way Burnley do, and he's nowhere near mobile enough to be as successful as we needed him to be in our system.

Same thing with Klaassen, Rooney and Sigurdsson. Hopefully we have a new team in charge of tfrs now.

I still believe that, given the right system, Klaassen, Gylfi and Keane can still be decent players for us.
  • Sigurdsson was playing in an unfamiliar role for most of the season, still managed to score and create a couple.
  • Klaassen has struggled physically, but in the right system (where he'd be the spare man) - I think he'd flourish.

I hope you're right mate. But for me Klaassen isn't a good enough player to make up for his lack of physical attributes. I think someone posted when he signed from Ajax, he wasn't particularly involved in a lot of their play, and we've already got too many players who don't get involved. Everton are a poor side in transition, hence why most managers we've had lately set up so defensively. To improve that they need players with mobility.

Sigurdsson was bought to play that left sided role. To cut in and create or score goals. At Swansea he had almost a free role, and a big target man to aim for, while taking everything. His stats still weren't anything extraordinary. IMO Koeman was hoping he could occupy the left side, cut in, find space and score goals. He did do this a couple of times to be fair. Plus his work-rate is pretty good. Perhaps cos he hadn't had a full pre-season and they didn't sign a striker, it just didn't work. He'll probably still be a decent player for Everton, but he's not the player to take us on to the next level, which is more what I was getting at.

At Burnley under Dyche, he played his way to England selection. There must be a player in there somewhere, one we admittedly have not seen at Everton. I will suspend judgement until a new manager has had a chance to work with him, and the team seems to be playing with a bit of confidence.

With Sigurdsson, he was much improved once he had Baines behind him. As you say his work-rate was good, but half of that was because he had to cover the abysmal Martina for half the season. With a proper left-back behind him if he's played on that side, he should be able to do better next season.

Completely agree with others that he’s been really poor, but as the previous poster has said, others need to be shipped out first. So think he’ll be here for another season.

We've had defenders in the past with no pace, Weir, Stubbs,Gough, difference being those guys knew how to read a game, when to step forward a yard, this fella keane hasn't a clue unfortunately.

Watson in his latter years was an absolute master of this. I remember when he was about 33/34 he absolutely schooled Michael Owen brilliantly. And kicked him into mid air ;)

I'd keep him, but buy a better centre back who can play alongside him. Most of the season he's played alongside Williams who is absolutely dog mess. But seemed to play a lot better (not meaning played well) when alongside jags.
