2017/18 Michael Keane

He's not mobile enough to play that role though.

His signing kind of shows how poor the recruitment was with Walsh. He was signed cos of his age and he was on the fringe of the England squad, which sounds ideal. But realistically he was just doing really well in a very organised, defensive system. Which is why Tarkowski has basically done as well if not better since he replaced Keane in the same system. We don't play the way Burnley do, and he's nowhere near mobile enough to be as successful as we needed him to be in our system.

Same thing with Klaassen, Rooney and Sigurdsson. Hopefully we have a new team in charge of tfrs now.

He was signed because he had a very good few seasons with Burnley. We weren't the only club after him.

If you think back to last summer, he actually came in and hit the ground running. All pre-season he looked superb and in the first games of the season/Europa League he was excellent.

He had a bit of a dip against Chelsea and then by the end of that torrid run of games against the top sides, the entire team had crumbled.

He was in-and-out and suffered a very, very bad injury btw, which shouldn't be overlooked. At one point they were concerned he'd be out all season, if not longer, it was that bad.

The lad hasn't been helped by a constant change in who played next to him (either side) and then, conversely, when he did get a settled partner in Jags, for some reason he was played on the left - a position he has never played before in his career.

A really poor season overall obviously, but I'm not writing him off. There's a good player in there but he isn't a defensive leader or an organiser. That's Jags, but we need a younger, better version to come and slot in to that role, with Jags as the 4th choice CB for next season - Holgate third choice.

Williams is as good as gone, barring a major turnaround when the new manager comes in, and Mori should be binned off.

If Keane doesn't pick up his form by January, then we have to look at other options.

Think he’s reached his peak. Doesn’t have the technique or intelligence to get better. Looking ok sitting deep for an Allardyce type team is what he does best. Never seen a player turned so easily in the box by opposition strikers.

This is the worry - against teams where we want to push up and be on the front foot he looks cumbersome.

You can allow for that, though. You just have to fit the right players in and around - it's all part of having a balanced team and system.

I hope you're right mate. But for me Klaassen isn't a good enough player to make up for his lack of physical attributes. I think someone posted when he signed from Ajax, he wasn't particularly involved in a lot of their play, and we've already got too many players who don't get involved. Everton are a poor side in transition, hence why most managers we've had lately set up so defensively. To improve that they need players with mobility.

Sigurdsson was bought to play that left sided role. To cut in and create or score goals. At Swansea he had almost a free role, and a big target man to aim for, while taking everything. His stats still weren't anything extraordinary. IMO Koeman was hoping he could occupy the left side, cut in, find space and score goals. He did do this a couple of times to be fair. Plus his work-rate is pretty good. Perhaps cos he hadn't had a full pre-season and they didn't sign a striker, it just didn't work. He'll probably still be a decent player for Everton, but he's not the player to take us on to the next level, which is more what I was getting at.

Sigurdsson will almost certainly be played centrally next season I'd imagine.

If Silva comes in, he plays with two wingers. Proper wide forwards, in either a 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1.

Have a feeling our new DoF will be looking at all the players to asses them before the new season starts and then???

I have a feeling our new DOF and Manager ( since November) have already fully assessed the squad prior to appts. We have to hit the ground running with the World Cup .....leaving our business until after will be suicidal

I'd give him one more season to sort himself out, under a new manager. Mainly due to the fact we'll take a big hit if we sell him now.
Use him as a squad player if we have to. If it still doesn't work out, donate him to a science lab.

The scientists wouldn't want him.

On a serious note, agree with your first point, last season was an abomination on so many fronts. I'm inclined to give some of the new players slack in the, probably vain, hope they come good.

It's an almighty task for the new manager isn't it? I think the squad is in its worst shape for a long time. Under Bobby we'd got sone deadwood, but he at least bequeathed Koeman some seasoned pros and talents. Ditto Moyes for Martinez.

It was a condemnation in terms of the lack of progress made over the last few seasons when only Keane could make it into the back four; I love Jags, Seamus and Bainsy but there should have been a lot more competition for their places. Keane has been shown to be a mid-table level defender but with the right partner could still be effective.
