200 migrants clash with police on Greek island of Lesbos

About 200 migrants trying to board a ship have clashed with police and coastguard officials on the Greek island of Lesbos, according to reports.

A coastguard official on the island told the Reuters news agency that the group of people threw stones at police before officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd."

Itv news.
how to win hearts and minds in action

seeing as loads of eastern Europeans have come here, there must be loads of room left there, so we should send the refugees to those countries fair swap, everybody is happy.

No need. There's plenty of space everywhere if they are distrubted proportionally mate, just that the refugees all want to come to Western Europe and aren't happy when they're told they can't.

Passing the problem along...

imagine the uproar from people like oldblue, if the UK said NO and turned them away. (refugees im on about too, genuine ones)
What makes these refugees not genuine?

Why is there hesitation in helping people who have nothing who have had little choice but to flee and giving them a hand up in life.

well, unfortunately it is generally the people who have no empathy with people suffering abroad who also have no empathy with the homeless here. Let's just start by trying to house people and see where it takes us

That's the thing though, I do have empathy for those less fortunate than me, I also did a little work in the same homeless centre stevie Naismith often helps out. I just believe that whilst we have british born and raised residents here, losing their homes because the price of rent and general living prices are spiralling out of control, those are the ones we should help first. Sort our own mess out then we can help others.

This topic has only been brought to light because of the baby boy washing up on the shores, so if anything I think a lack of empathy has existed for months or even years until recently. The same people fuming over the boys body are the same people who complain foreigners are taking 'our' jobs only a few days ago.

Sometimes we spend so long helping everyone abroad with humanitarian aid that we often forget about ourselves.

Refugees are people who are in danger. Once they reach a safe country they are no longer in danger.

no hesitation whatsoever. as proven the Uk pay more in aid than any other EU country. we take on more than our share of migrants.

why is it ok for hungary to say NO. fullstop. end of. ??????

Watch that video again.

Watch the main throw his (possibly pregnant) wife and baby onto the train tracks.

Now tell me, from the bottom of your heart and soul, with a straight face, that he truly cares about the well-being of his family.

If you can do that then I have genuine fears for your household because I would never, ever lay a finger on a woman, child or baby under any circumstance, let alone throw them to the ground like a rag doll.

This is a direct response to you what you have just said, not what "I wanted you to say".

Do you know what was happening before the video starts. This is obviously desperate people taking actions which are alien to the likes of you and me. However, I think it's fair to assume that many of these people are under extreme stress. They are close to breaking point, if not already beyond. The video I saw, saw a man being rough with the woman and child, but then holding them tight. There is little context. Without knowing the full story I don't think it fair to hold it up as an example of how all refugees behave.

As for why some would take measures I effort to ensure passage through one country and onto another. Again you have no idea. Family may have already reached a destination. Treatment by the authorities in one country may have been negative (in a lot of East European countries the authorities are blackmailing immigrants). They may fear that they're going to end up suffocated in the back of a lorry.

There could be plenty of explanations for what we see as irrational behaviour. If you're happy to pre judge, fire away. I doubt you'll ever know what is going on in the heads of these people who are obviously suffering.

easy for you to say, they are probably in fear of being sent back or living in camps with horrendous conditions...they see germany/UK as countries that are more likely to treat them fairly
