A stab at why these folk, not the ones in Calais, dont try their luck in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, or Egypt, is probably because to get there they would have to walk through a few hundred square miles of ISIS controlled land. Probably the very thing they are legging it from.
Sorted then. We help make a safe route to those countries.
yeah, the 'free speech' debate over the Mohammed cartoons no matter what the rights or wrongs are would not make me feel I was welcome at the momentThings like the whole hijab debate in France might put some people off France.
beautifully put. We are always keen to advertise the delights of a free capitalist country then object to how people may feel about their own needs in countries with less resources. To hear people saying anyone who is prepared to leave their home with no guarantee of anything is greedy is very strange.I've been to many so called 'developing' countries over the years. I've seen Children brought up on the sides of dirt tracks in dust and pollution and places where people have little hope or opportunity. In Africa I was getting stopped all the time by people asking how I could help them get to the UK. All this time thinking 'why would you want to leave your family and community for cold wet days in northern England?'
Through the Internet and global television they're seeing people living with proper roads, houses, schools and hospitals. Where the power doesn't go off every day. They're watching premier league footballers who earn incomprehensible amounts of money. Many people see the opportunity of a better life. It's not just about escaping war torn countries it's about wanting to experience the many things we take for granted. I personally think we're being greedy and selfish for disallowing people these privledges.
volunteer for that, I will join you and then I will believe you are sincereSorted then. We help make a safe route to those countries.

One thing I don't understand is why they aren't fleeing to countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc.
Wealthy countries with the same religion, language and similar culture.
Because they'll never be granted permanent residence or citizenship friend.
Thats why.
Where as the soft-touchs in the UK will grant any tom d ic k or harry 'permanent leave to remain' forever.
Even when refugees own countries are 'safe' later.

They're heading north mate.
Not south. Which they could very easily do as a lot of them are going to Egypt or Libya first too.
