Who do we owe a trillion quid to?

Call me ignorant or even uneducated in this matter but i think it's more caution, certainly there are people who need refuge however my only worry is if we were to let in 10's of thousand refugees, how many of them would be people taking advantage of the current situation? How do we know that every single one is in need of the help? How do we know that a minority wouldn't be coming to carry out acts of war here? We don't and that's my only worry/caution. Should we help more? Yes undoubtedly, just find it hard to believe that its possible to filter the people who need the help from the people who are taking advantage.

Pretty simple solution to that. Ask what their religion is....

One thing I don't understand is why they aren't fleeing to countries like Saudi Arabia, Dubai etc.... Wealthy countries.

Countries where they would practically live like slaves. Those countries are wealthy for the few, but that belies the poverty of the many. Saudi Arabia has a history of trafficking of slave labour, and Dubai was built on it.

You and @bizarro are insinuating that these desperate refugees wake up in the morning and go ''oh I know, I'll make a life threatening journey to the soft touch that is the UK for a bit of the good life'', it's a ridiculous attitude.

But then we shouldn't be surprised, one of your lot has been in trouble (yet again) for something very similar today.

Haven't read the thread. I will say this, though.

The reaction of both the German and the Greek people (oh the irony) has put this country to shame. This is a massive humanitarian crisis and we have been seen to be small-minded, mean-spirited bigots.

In answer to why migrants don't go to other wealthy middle east countries a) their regimes are pretty bad and b) they won't get work as they won;t get in and the labour used is far eastern/asian. What is alarming at the moment is the rhetoric coming out of Poland and Hungary

Poland, for all its merits, is not the most open-minded nation, multi-culturally speaking. As I've said before, the vast majority of Poles don't regard the murdered millions of Polish jews as Polish. To them, Poles are Catholic. It's not a mongrel nation like the UK. There are Poles and there are (a few remaining) Jews. And the Polish Roma, of course.
