And he’ll get time. When he plays I’ll have the same expectations of him as I do any senior player though. Yesterday he was ok, it wasn’t a bad game for him, but it wasn’t great either. It just made me laugh to see the relentless positivity about his performance when if it had been niasse everyone would have said he was awful.
That’s the problem though. We crush our youngsters with over expectation, He’s 19, not 29.
As long as you judge him as a 19 year old with room to grow then fine. But generally we don’t. We give them an even worse time than senior pros playing alongside who aren’t pulling their weight either. They are our best route to improvement.

I am always aware that a young player can get better. What I’m talking about is different though. We put out a team yesterday to get a result in that game, as we always do. Kean wasn’t picked so that he can be better in 3 years, he was picked to help us win yesterday. On that basis his age is irrelevant when judging his individual performance. It can and should be taken into account when judging his performances overall, but on any given day if he’s picked over a 29 year old then he has to perform better than the 29 year old would have done to justify it. Disagreeing with that Is ‘the problem’ in my opinion. Saying it’s ok to earn big boy money and get big boy fame but don’t worry if you still play like a 12 year old were just honoured you pay for us is not conducive to creating a successful set up.

If all you care about is today's result, then sure.

If you care about results today, tomorrow, next week and next year then the 29 year old needs to perform considerably better than the 19 year old to justify the selection. All else equal, you should develop the asset whose price tag will go up over playing the more experienced player whose transfer fee is declining due to age.

All true, all covered in the original post.

He is 3 years younger than DCL.
Remember what you guys said about DCL 3 years ago? :p

Pretty much what I came to say.

He’s not ready yet. When he came off and Carlo put Delph on, Everton got back in the game immediately.

I’m not writing off the lad, but I think he’s best coming off the bench and learning this season and starting a few just to work on his game.

I really just think he needs to score one to change everything for him. He had a couple of great opportunities, one self created this past week that show his talent. But he definitely does not seem at ease there right now, not even like he did in the first two games. That always happens in the sport, and he just needs to get the first one off of his back and then just learn under Don Carlo and Dunc. He will be fine, cream always rises to the top, and you can see his pure speed, strength, and eye for goal. He reminds me so much of Lukaku(poor first touch included).

On that basis, we should never play youngsters. By definition they are not the finished product.
Many on this forum would have sold Calvert Lewin, Holgate and JJK some time ago and frankly it’s ridiculous.
if we want the finished article, then spend 100m on prizing a striker from a CL club.
Sorry, but that’s not going to happen.
our best route is to develop younger players, giving them time and space to improve.
The balance of immediate team needs vs identifying, developing and improving young players is the skill of management.
Criticising young players is easy.

That had nothing to do with Kean leaving, it had to do putting a better defensive mid in there, playing more behind the ball with some level of positional intelligence, and pushing Davies out to the left. Kean was fantastic for the 15 minutes in the second half when players started giving him the ball to his feet. His movement was excellent, he got into space. He was unlucky to score, but the kid managed 5 shots on goal. He was dangerous.

But they took out Kean to put Delph on, so of course it has to do with Kean? I just don't think he's quite ready yet, but look how DCL turned out, I'd say Kean has better physical attributes (pace) than DCL. Lad needs time.

would anyone take the money back now to re-invest?

Undecided myself like, finding a 30 million pound striker wont be easy (think everton of brazil fame is around that though)

...good point. I’m still waiting to be convinced but I genuinely wouldn’t cash in.

£25m-£30m is an average fee these days. Brands hasn’t got many wrong and Kean’s acceleration from a standing start to have that point blank effort saved by the keeper at Newcastle was an encouraging sign. An Italian managerial appointment will hopefully help.

You would get rid, despite our new world class manager saying he thinks he is quality and needs time to settle. I think we need to trust the judgement of some people who say this kid is the real deal and let him bed in,he's 19,nowhere near the finished article.

I really believe patience with this kid could bring huge reward.

Hes 19
He just landed in the prem
He hasnt been played alot
The pace of the game looks likes its shocked him
He has got 60 minutes under his belt and was blowing bubbles towards the end, which is understandable given all the above.
This kid just needs minutes and a goal.
Im confident this kid will come good, but im just an hairy arsed builder but the Don agrees and wanted to sign him last year, so thats good enough for me...
