All of this is just a way to use your ability to play the guitar to place your appreciation above other peoples. There's only 2 types of music, stuff you like and stuff you don't. If only people with an ability to dissect composition and arrangement were allowed an opinion on pop music it would be an extremely narrow (and boring) field.

But it goes beyond that, DG.

Players can appreciate what has gone into a particular piece, how it fits together, etc.. Yes, you automatically dissect songs, which is outwith appreciating them. You can dissect a song by an artist and still not be keen on it. I'm not keen on a lot of Dylan songs, but really appreciate the interpretation of them by The Byrds, or Hendrix's take on 'All along the watchtower'.

Listeners can appreciate what has gone into a particular piece. They can understand and marvel at the beauty of the song. It is this second category, not the first above, which has actually elevated the Beatles to the position they hold in the pantheon of musical artists.

Here's a controversial one.
I'm reading of another old person who has gone to meet their maker and despite living in almost squalor and penury has left almost £350K to Cats Protection League or similar. It annoys me that a "more" worthwhile cause is not benefitting, Cancer Research, Dementia and o on.

U2
Artic Monkeys

Anyone who says Queen needs a slap.

Anyone who says U2 needs one as well :p

But at least we can agree on Artic Monkeys.

And practically all the bands from those early years of this century.

Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand etc.

Guitar rock’s last stand was pretty underwhelming if you ask me.

Yeah, I'm OK with a bit of U2 really and its easy to see how their music has mass appeal

I grew up during the 90s and loved the vanguard of the Britpop scene at the time; Oasis (not such a Blur fan), Radiohead and the Verve were epoch defining acts the last great bands I care for, and even Radiohead peaked with The Bends and Oasis peaked with What's The Story.

Bands after that were dross in comparison.. Travis, Sterophonics etc, and Coldplay deserve exemption from that generalisation.

I suppose its the same for every generation. I hear older people who grew up on Zepplin laugh at people raised on Coldplay. Stuff was always better in your day.

Some terrible shouts in this thread

Abba.. May not be very manly to write this, but I consider them one of the greatest pop acts in musical history. 2 insanely talented songwriters teamed with two of of the most distinctive female vocalists ever put on record, throw in the usual relational strife and the results are simply amazing. Their songs ahve that timeless quality that make them popular today and will keep them popular 50 years from now.

At least no one's said The Carpenters so far
