Bill Kenwright will want to appoint the best manager. He will want to appoint the next SAF,ensuring stability and success for years to come.
Unfortunately it is very difficult to make an appointment like that ,but to suggest that an internal appointment is being made to save money just makes no sense, the saving of a million or two could cost the club tens of millions.

If there is an internal appointment it will be from the fear of change rather than any savings made.
I think Bill Kenwright is a bit in awe of David Moyes and may try to keep the set up as close as possible to the Moyes era.

That may or may not be a good idea.

Much nearer the mark as to the reason if he goes internal IMO.

Why hasn't anybody mentioned Martin Jol yet? I think he'd be perfect.

Say that Periera decides to stay with Porto, compete in the Champions League and spend some of the £60m they've banked from selling Rodriguez and Moutinho to Monaco, would we be open to a 'brains trust' at Everton? Dalglish had Roy Evans and Ronnie Moran in the bootroom to help him through. I don't particularly want Martinez or Lennon in charge, so I'd be willing to consider some sort of figurehead such as Jol or Heynkes to mentor Neville for two or three years until he's ready to take over. It could be a risk because Pip wouldn't know whether management was for him until the time came. Maybe it would be feasible for him to manage the U21 as well as being assistant manager? It would build on the experience that he's getting with England, give him direct responsibility for managing a team and make the link between the first team and the U21 side stronger. Stubbs could work more closely with the first team to take up any slack.

Succession-planning is difficult and the only example I can think of it really working is Porto ironically.

Why not mate? Are you really of the opinion that Roberto Martinez or Vitor Pereira are better fits for this club than Jol? I think he did a very good job with Spurs and his Ajax team played some ace football. Plus he's actually had a successful squad in the league here unlike the other candidates.

Is Martinez under contract?

No way Dave (I broke my leg) Whelan will let Martinez walk without compensation.

Well he said he'd release him. That's why I said what I said.

But in 2005 he said he'd give me a bonus when working for JJB. I'm still waiting.

I'm concerned that if we pay to get someone like Martinez or Lennon they're going to want a long contract and if it quickly becomes apparent that we've made a mistake it will cost us millions more to pay them off. Say, for example, it's £3m to release them and then £3m per year in wages for a four year contract, we've potentially left ourselves open to a £15m liability if we get it wrong. Whereas a free agent would be more likely to accept a shorter trial period.
