So are the favourites RR, Martinez and Vitor?

I wouldn't mind any of them, be good to get a fresh approach on a very good starting XI.

Expect a bunion backlash should Martinez get the job, they reckon the other candidates where just a ruse to get Whelan to drop his compensation demands.
However they said the same when Martinez was approached, claiming it was an inside deal with Stubbs and Weir signed last week.
No doubt an exclusive will follow in the 'Metro' and the 'Mirror'.

What do you think of the idea that Ralf is being interviewed for a Director of Football type role though?

I generally prefer it when the manager takes care of that stuff

I think Directors of Football are generally quite redundant and only muddy the waters

The manager should go to the chairman, get what money is available, and then call all the shots himself

I'm a bit more old fashioned when it comes to that sort of stuff though

I don't think we need a DOF

We just need a competant manager who has reasoable financial backing

I do agree with you but there are examples where a DoF has worked, but this is mainly abroad. I think sometimes if he is of the right mentality, then it is something that can benefit the club.

But I do agree that this is an unlikely scenario as it is very un-Everton

Considering how clumsy we´ve been in the transfer market over the last decade (not at picking the right players just in the interaction with players, agents and other clubs) I think a deisgnated director of football would work wonders. I´d gladly have one.

Do people forget the attacking football we played under moyes? We were hardly a un-attractive side or stoke!

Granted he mixed it up, didn't always play that way but looking at the stubbornness of some to play a certain way whatever the results at all costs....

Just saying like but IMO a clever manager can play diferent ways and adapt to given situations.

As the players got better, the style got better, no question.

I just don't think we need one

All of the managers in the running should be capable of doing this on their own

I could only see a DOF being a requirement if the manager needed some extra assistance

I don't think this is the case. I think it's imperitive that when the new manager comes in, he feels that he will have the freedom to shape the club in his own image

You chuck in a DOF, and all of a sudden that goes out the window

I think it would cause problems, if only because we've never had one before

If it was me, and I was a brand new manager, it would undercut my confidence if the club decided to have a DOF just as I signed my deal. I would think "Don't you think I can do this on my own?"

It would be different if the club already had a DOF, because I would treat as just part and parcel of that particular job. But if it was brand new appointment, just as I came in to manage, I would see it as a vote of no confidence from the board before I've even started

Everywhere else in Europe its par for the course. I think its sad that it'll never catch on here as it helps clubs on the continent take a more long-term view and survive the loss of a head coach without losing all the knowledge that's been built up over time.

Depends on the manager, some managers would prefer working with one so they can concentrate on coaching the players and getting the best out of them without worrying about tying up transfers and creating long-term strategies etc

Having a director of football can lead stability and continuity ... I believe that WBA and Swansea have a director of football, if not in name then in practice, i.e. the chairman acts as the overall leader.

QPR is a great example of the disasters that can happen when you appoint a manager that changes everything. When one manager leaves and another arrives, with a different philosophy then you have a bloated squad of players, etc...

I quite like the idea of Ralf Rangnick (even if his name does sound like the Viking end of the world: Ragnarok)

German efficiency, teamwork, application, excellence.

Powered to the top of my list.

But given the three options I'm in the anyone but Martinez camp.

I'm still certain that Martinez is a shoo in, I'll be amazed if Bill's brave enough to appoint Pereira or Rangnick.

agree with this. We only have media reports that these three are the case anyway. Maybe Bill had Rangnick flown in to ask him advice on appointing a manager and if he'd be willing to be director of football? We don't know.
