I honestly cannot recall a "No 2" stepping up to be the main man; there is a reason they were a No 2 in the first place, and that is not a dig, just different skill sets are needed. Think of Peter Taylor, Brian Kidd, the idiot at Blackburn, Connor at Wolves. The only place where is worked ok for a period was with that lot in the 70s & 80s, and they were different days.

i honestly think martinez will stay at wigan .european football , community sheild , righting wrongs and getting back into the prem is his incentive .
i dont think kenwright is mad enough to sign lennon mon or hughes etc.
i also dont think hes brave/knowledgable enough to sign a perriera or klinsmann .
so that means an internal appointment.
stubbs is doing a good enough job already , but hasnt got the 'umph' needed to be the first team manager.
dunc just hasnt got the experience (but has the 'umph' stubbs lacks imo)
which leaves david weir , knows the club , knows the players , worked closely with moyes and the team , and is well respected.
him with round is a pretty seamless transition.
wether its good enough to take us to the next level or stop us dropping back a level is the question.

Weir has zero credentials for this job (managing a 6th place PL club ). He's only just been linked with the Falkirk job three months ago...which would have been the right level for him to start at. He's basically Stubbs' assistant with the U21s. It would be a ridiculous appointment.

Internal wise - and on merit - you'd have to put it in this order:

Round
Stubbs
Irvine
Weir

...and I wouldn't even talk seriously about Duncan or Neville - in fact, I wouldn't talk seriously about any of them.

We stand at a crossroads - Kenwright assured us we'd get a 'significant' manager. Well he should have his feet held to the fire to make good on that promise and not hire on the cheap one of the lads who puts out the cones at FF.

It'd be pathetic giving someone from the club the job. Absolutely pathetic. It just gives Kenwright another chance to employ a yes man. Someone who wont stand up to him.

cant help but chuckle and expect the worst with that comment :)

Roberto di matteo didn't do too badly last year...

You're not the only one mate. The only thing that stops me totally falling in with that thinking is the bookies are barely registering this as a strong possibility. Now they're either well off the pace, or they have a very clear picture of the Martinez situation. If Martinez goes west as an option I'd expect the odds on Weir to come right in.

As you know Dave ...all starts with the dough...so budget (spends) determines your managerial targets that and a stack of NDA,s. Heard Bill gave Moyes a gold watch for his leaving present.........fume away.
