With Barry gradually moved on, and Gibson and Cleverley permanently moved on, options of Davies, Gana, Schneiderlin and Besic in the deeper midfield positions is decent imo. All high energy, great at disrupting play but with skill on the ball too. Hard to see McCarthy fitting in there sadly, as I had high hopes for him.

Gueye
Besic
Davies
Barry
McCarthy
Barkley

...I ask again why we needed to urgently throw £24M at adding to this department?

Barkley isn't used as a CM.
Barry has not got long left at all.
Davies is 18 and played only a few games - let's not hype too much.

So technically we have Gana and and oft maligned Besic and McCarthy. We needed one more.

Barkley has played there in the past and can do the job.
Barry has played nearly all our games.
Davies proved conclusively yesterday he has the temperament and game to play week in, week out.

We have 6 CMs to choose from - which is why spending £24m for another one was madness. We are now like Spurs with midfielders falling out of cupboards.

Koeman has failed to prioritise key areas we are threadbare in.

why does improving our squad nark you?? and if we get £20m plus for McCarthy then we have basically swapped him for a much better player in snides..

lookman slotted yesterday Friend ???

What makes you think that's happening? It's not.

We had 6 players chasing two spots - and that was BEFORE another £24M was paid out on Schneiderlin!

That cash should have been prioritised on a player that can break down stubborn teams that sit back in numbers....the very one's we struggle against.

Remember that next week if we've been banging our heads on a brick wall at palace and come away with nothing or a just a point.

You're being incredibly ignorant here so let's break it down.

If everyone is fit and available we have 6 CM's (not including Barkley, just leave that one). How often is this the case?

Barry has played nearly every game out of necessity and it's ignorant to think his form hasn't massively dropped this season. Davies looks a player but a month ago did we think he could be a regular starter? I didn't; he's just a kid.

Barry - Legs going
Gana - AFCON
Besic - Injured
McCarthy - Just returned to fitness, for now
Davies - Nice surprise
Schneiderlin - Not match fit yet

At best this season we've had 2-3 CM's fit with differing form and Davies as a nice surprise before Schneidelin signed.

Get your head out of your arse it was a position that needed strengthening and with over 2 weeks of the transfer window remaining it's premature to say Koeman has failed to prioritise key areas (funny, I didn't know he was in charge of bidding and contract negotiations either :))

I ask again why we needed to urgently throw £24M at adding to this department?

Gueye - Good.
Besic - Injury prone, inconsistent and still not seen anything to show that he can make it as a Premier League player.
Davies - Young. Would rather him get phased into the squad over the next few years.
Barry - 35 this year, turns around slower than the management of a large University.
McCarthy - Not entirely sure what to think of him, capable as being the legs in midfield - but lacks the final ball.
Barkley - Not a CM.

Gonna have to sign a few more if they're all falling out of cupboards.
