Not sure if Coleman is capable of 40+ game a season mate, we are going to need both and no mistake, Patterson will get there, i can see the talent, but has developmental milestones to hit - he needs balance in this game, but also think he needs a run of games - its when hes been at his best.
Given his injury record I think the one who defo isn't capable of 40+ games in a season is Patterson.

That said, I can see Dyche handing Patterson another go to try and prove himself. But he'll defo start Coleman in August.

I've seen enough of Garner to be comfortable with the RB berth for this next season at least. When Seamus retires though we must bring in once and for all a very handy RB.

I think its often underestimated how little senior football Patterson has played for his age, when you compare that the level hes playing at, there are bound to be rough edges developmentally and for me, its partly confidence and consistency and his game hasn't naturally balanced.

If his full tilt is the performance we saw in the Derby that's all right by me. I do feel the lad needs a run of senior football games.

With Coleman - hes inspirational and drives the team. He did sit out half the season though so he had a full tank for the second half of the season - i dont know if he can do 40 + games, i doubt it. So i think we need both.

Garner im intrigued by at RB, not least by the option of being "inverted" even if that just in part of a game - its gives us a tactical option. That said ill be surprised to see Onana here in Sep - so he may be required fulltime in the engine room.

That was one of the main reasons we should have kept our money in our pocket. We really should have been going after a decent experienced player at this level. The club were hoping for another Robertson or Tierney and were seduced by the thought of getting the next FB off the Irn Bru League.

Whether he comes good or not, it's undeniable the lad (besides that derby performance where he smashed it) has not made the grade at a PL level.

BTW, I fully agree on Garner. He can do that sort of thing from FB...I just dont see Dyche asking him to do it!

I think the club underestimated how quick they could get him out of the box and start - also the bridge between him and Coleman is to stark experientially- but we know our recruitment is box of frogs stuff - hes played very few senior mins - so he actually does need developing. Last season is the most senior mins hes played and he did that at an incredibly high level, hes been stop and start with injuries (again his body getting used to demands) - without any real high, highs or low, lows - id expect that in his development. We cant expect more then the rate the lad develops at - if we signed him undercooked thats on us really.

With young players i always look at full tilt - if the Derby is full tilt, our job of work is to develop him to turn that performance in 38 times a year, if we do that we have a player and a good investment.

But right now, we need and will need both Coleman and Patterson and let them fight it out, bring each other on - its not one or the other for me, both will have their moments like last year.

I also don't see Dyche playing a central midfielder out of position. Finally you've made a sane point!

By the way were you of the same opinion on experience when we got any other right back? Cuz your opinion on an often injured and absolute turd right back, age 21-22, who was deployed as a winger as he was bad at right back, is important to me.

I watched him for Scotland while he was still at rangers and I thought he looked like a player.

But everything Ive seen from him at Everton apart from one or two performances has underwhelmed me. I think he's found it hard physically to come to terms with the PL and also technically...he always looks like he's bamboozled about his positioning.

Next season is a big one for him: get to grips with the position or he'll for sure be eclipsed by the incoming RB next summer when Coleman finally retires.

I watched him a fair bit before he joined to mate. The thing that has surprised me is he has far more to his attacking game, then he’s showed, he has a quality cross on him and he can dribble and penetrate and we haven’t that, my take is his defending is or has been the weakest part of his game or hasn’t balanced his attacking and defending game congruently. He’s over compensated on his defending to be solid at the expense of his attacking game.

Yes, defo. But that's just another way of saying he cant hack it as a modern FB in the PL.

Make or break for him this season.

I was impressed with his under-lapping and direct runs in at goal when he played for Scotland. We've seen nothing of that here, and I think it might be that he's petrified about not having the engine to get back when or if such a surge breaks down.

The PL is less forgiving than international games.

I think he it was his first season in the PL plagued by injuries showed glimpses of being a great signing exactly the sort of potential we should be looking for.Next season will be a regular.

Season and a half.

If this feller has it in him we need to be seeing it regularly week in week out when he gets his opportunity again.

I'd say this season coming is crucial for him.

Potential to be a top RB IMO
Based on what? Barely played any senior football and doubt you seen much of him at youth level and 22 this year needs to hit the ground running if he’s starting this year no time for bedding in this year need performances from the start. Likewise Onana if he doesn’t perform well this year and goes missing in games he’s another one who can go in the bin.

22 is no age really. You can’t be writing players off at 22
