Needs a good six month run without an injury before he can cement a place at RB or RWB.

Defending in the PL is something he cant do and what he has to be able to do, so excuse me for not being impressed with attacking a Wigan defender high up the pitch....something I've always said is the thing he can and should...if he's in the team at all...be deployed to do: play out wide.Rubbish that lad because YOU were out of position once in the first half, or so says the bitter orange moggie...lol
Pretty sure he had a number of good games playing as a full-back last season in the PL. If you think he’s not a full-back then I believe you’re highlighting your lack of knowledge about the game. And your pater is dull, [Poor language removed] and boring.Defending in the PL is something he cant do and what he has to be able to do, so excuse me for not being impressed with attacking a Wigan defender high up the pitch....something I've always said is the thing he can and should...if he's in the team at all...be deployed to do: play out wide.
Just keep him away from that defence or we'll be annihilated - as we were so often when he played in it last season.

The RB berth is contested. And that's the way it should be.
Coleman gets at defences a lot more aggressively than Patterson. I think in a game against a lesser team he'll be on the pitch. I've seen nothing from Patterson so far that suggests he's prepared to take on a defender.
Great last ditch challenge to keep it 1-0, his best contribution, but FFS this lad just cant take anyone on.
I dont thinks so. Nothing Ive seen so far makes me think he has it in him to take a defender on hit the dead ball line and swing a cross in.
You dont have to dribbl;e past them to get past them. He turns back or sideways as soon as he sees an opposition defender in front of him.
No overlapping and no ambition to carry the ball deep into opposition territory.
If he adds that to a game we have a player with enormous potential.

Can’t defend though

Is that supposed to contradict what I stated?
He has to throw in tackles more because he's out of position more often. Can tackle though

He cant defend, he has no positional sense for it. We have two others better at that. He has potential to adapt to a wide man as Bale did at Spurs...although obviously he's not at that level like.
It's as simple as that.
All these arguments were had last season and most on here agreed that Patterson couldn't be trusted in a 4 man defence. Absolutely NOTHING has changed in that respect.
Because he wasn't doing much attacking. That doesn't mean I dont think he can attack. You said you’ve “always said” he’s fine going forward, but at the start of last season when he was defending well you started slating his attacking capabilities?
I see the bigot has woken up.

The lad is a ALL AT SEA positionally. I've said before that it also gets him a lot of injuries because he's constantly turning and twisting trying to recover ground lost to attackers. He'll be injured again this season doing that too.
